Iboats has always offered pix hosting via uploads, as long as I've been here anyway. Just hasnt always worked well, but does seem to now. And IMO, pix should be minimized as much as possible. If they remain viable w details viewable, sub 500KB would be even better. Sub 250KB better still....

This doesn't need to be an image storage/host site, per se, and smaller images allows more images to be stored in the same space as fewer 1MB pix could be.

The nature of some problems and suggested repairs, necessitates posting pix. So coming up w the best possible way to accomplish that is an on going concern.

There are changes coming, and 1 of those changes includes significantly upgrading the servers, so better able to handle storage and hosting of pix as well as the tremendous volume of traffic the forums generate. Iboats has an incredibly active membership base, but at any given time there could be significantly more people simply surfing the sute, as non-members, who dont get to see posted images, but are still consuming bandwidth.

Unfortunately, the iboats stored method is not immune from losses either..... Happened, more then once.... Past improvements have made that less likely, as will other pending changes/improvements.

Hi all,

I have temporarily suspended the time limit to edit your own posts if you would like to fix any of your posts effected by this. (Please don't abuse this privilege!)

We will be rolling out some new features to our site within the next few months and another way to share photos will be a part of that...and I promise we won't pull the rug out from under you like Photobucket did.

Typically, a 640x480 picture is plenty big for most pictures on a forum like this. A picture this size in jpg format will typically be less than 100K. I resize all my pictures to this size before I post them.

PNG files are indeed compressed. For a forum, there isn't a good reason to use png over a jpg or vice versa.

HA! Bruce is of course right that I was most sloppy in that statement. Portable Network Graphics IS a compression. My sloppy thought was that PNGs are not a compression we normally can control, like with a JPEG. Too often, and I use both a lot, a PNG with a lot of detail and colors will be a much larger file size than you can achieve with easier steps on a JPEG. Thanks for pointing that out. I'll try to be more thoughtful before banging keys.

MTboatguy wife has a web hosting business. Bet he could comment on how a business like his wife's could do a 3rd party hosting program and how much something that would cost.

Give me a day or two, I am sure she can come up with a solution to this unreasonable situation that PB is now doing!

Would our time and effort to restore the pics to our threads be better spent using the new photo sharing options to come? Just wondering about the temporary lifting of the edit restriction time frame and the new options coming our way in the next few months.

I've got a bit of work ahead of me to replace the pics in 3 threads and want to do what will be best in the long term.

Seriously your business feeds up ads like your slopping hogs and now you want to soak us for almost 400 bucks to be able to link our pics. Unbelievable you think it should cost that much, many of us I'm sure would pay a reasonable amount to keep things status quo but no way is anyone going to be soaked for that kind of money.

Good luck, I'll watching for your business to tank and I won't be purchasing any more prints from you guys either Flickr is going to get my business from now on.
Later,
Rob

Thanks bruceb58 for the suggestions. I'll have to try the camera image in the future.

Should I try replacing all the photos on my rebuild that way or just leave the PB ones? It seems that if the thread might be useful for someone in the future the photos should be on the iboats forum.

Photos from Photobucket

Yep, they have committed Corporate Suicide by making you buy a $400 service plan
Other hosting site are available for free

I know I've post over and over and over again reasons I stopped using PB, but with the recent events, I am extremely glad I did when I did. However, I honestly hope someone finds some way to retrieve their photos and let others know how so they can get theirs as well. It honestly sounds like a blackmail scheme to me. I mean holding and locking all your pictures unless you pay $400 dollars sure sound blackmailish to me! :noidea:

I think enabling the 'Edit' feature that iboats_tim announced is a good idea . . . as it allows those who want to change the image source on their posts to another provider, or even just upload them to the threads.

Never liked posting photo URL from Photobucket, so I did not use it much. Of course, any of these free/low-cost photo posting sites could decide to change their pricing at any time, or even disappear completely. I think it is best to upload the pictures to the thread and insert them into the text. That is my approach after having to change nearly 700 image sources on posts a few years ago, when my ISP decided not to offer file storage any more . . .

I got the impression that the lock was for third party posting of photos and that a user is not supposed to be locked out from accessing their photos directly.

I will say it again...They don't want to do 3rd party hosting. They don't expect anyone to sign up for that $400 service. They could have made it $1000 and achieved the same result.

Agree. And it may not be suicide to stop doing the money losing part of your business. Doing the same thing over and over again, while losing money is definitely stupid.

Yes, I think the $400/yr is the intended deterrent, not an aspirational revenue goal.

Yeah well they deterred me alright. I've ordered canvas and metal prints from them because it was easy since I was at their site all the time. Not going to happen now though. Real smart deterrent they came up with.
