if the pistons are alright try honing the cylinders. if you can get all the scratches out just put new rings in. it is probably the cheapest route and you can do it yourself since you did almost half the work already.

I think the pistons are fine. I understand that you have to remove the powerhead completely though to get the pistons off. Is this correct? This sounds like a big job to me

Yes, you have to remove the head.

I looked at the pics and if that is the bad one I think it is probably the reeds.

Thanks guys! The reeds are on the way (thanks Ledge) and gaskets to get everything back together. Does my year boat have water deflectors? I can't find it in my service manuel, or online. Is there another name?
