My 1999 Alpha One Gen 2 recently developed a leak from the driveshaft seal where the vertical shaft from the lower unit plugs into the upper. I ordered the Mercruiser Quicksilver seal kit, spanner & 12 point 3/8” socket and started in, following steps in Mercruiser service manual #14.
But the driveshaft seal in my kit looks different than the one I removed: photo 1 (new on left, old on right in pieces)
The old seal had a lip that went down into the shaft with a ridge that fit into a groove. Of course it tore up during removal.
The new seal will be pressed in place but has no ridge to fit into the groove. Will it stay in place when the shaft is inserted?
Also, the manual shows two seals in that spot: photo 2 from service manual
My Quicksilver kit seems to only have one spring seal, number5 in photo 3
Should I just insert the one seal? Does it need gasket sealer to stay put? Am I missing something?
All answers are appreciated.
