I just picked up a 1993 Excel 18?? today for $300. The boat interior and floor is completely shot/rotten but the trailer was in excellent shape (going to use it for my boat). Well the guy I bought it from called me about a hour later saying someone had just called him about it and they wanted to buy the boat. They had no problem with paying what I paid for it and getting my trailer instead if the boat runs. The seller said it ran (I didn't really car if it did or not). So now I need to find out what motor is in it. It has a VP230 in it so I'm guessing it's either a 2.3 or 3.0 liter but would like to know for sure to try to get it running and get rid of it. Anyone know for sure?

Re: Picked up a boat with a VP230 have ?'s

It's a Volvo based engine with an overhead cam. Commonly called a rubber band engine due to the timing belt on the front of the engine. They are a spendy engine to keep up.
The 3.0L engine is a GM based pushrod engine. VERY common engine. Volvo went to the 3.0L engine in 94 and stopped using the Volvo based engines all together.
