Picked up a vintage 12 ft SeaKing

Well I went and picked up a vintage SeaKing 12 ft aluminum boat today for $120 with a set of 6 1/2' oars, they were originally asking $150 for it but I talked them down a bit because it needs a bit of work. At some point in the past it got a tear in the right side and the previous owner welded it back together, not pretty though so I well be doing some hammer and dolly work on it and sand the weld down and hopefully make it look a little more presentable. All the paint for the most part on the inside is gone so to help ensure that it is water tight and non-skid I was thinking I could take some roll on truck bed liner and coat the whole inside with that. I was also thinking that after sanding down the weld on the inside I could also coat the welded area with marine epoxy and fiberglass as well if needed. Anyway, photos

looks like it will make a nice fishing rig with some work, i got an old grumman 12 footer last summer vnose with a flat floor cleaned it up replaced the plywood seats best fishing boat you could ask for

Good luck with that. I have had a 12 foot Sea King vee, about the same vintage as yours, and a 12 foot Grumman vee like sea horse mentioned. You can't add a casting deck to that and retain stability, but a little flat floor will work great in that.

Yeah I figured it would be a fun little fishing boat which is what I wanted. Before I do anything I well have to go down to the Marine Board and secure a tittle in my name as I only have a few bits of paper saying people were giving up interest in the boat and no real title, I do have a title number though so hopefully that well help.

Read our restoration section and do a search for gluvit to stop and prevent leaks....... better then the bedliner idea.

How are the oars?

Cool thanks, I well look that up. The oars are 6.5 ft wooden oars, they are in pretty good shape, just a little drying on the rubber handles. Sorry about the size I forgot about that.

I spent a good portion of my childhood crusing around in a boat very similar to that one (only even MORE beat up) with a 4HP Evinrude. It could go anywhere and I didn't need to care if I hit anything. Wouldn't mind having one again to use to fish in some shallower water near my house. I have no idea where I'd keep it though.

Mine is currently leaned upside down against the house, I don't think I well bother trying to find a trailer, unless one finds me, as it fits so nicely in the back of my truck. It should be fun, as my Dad puts it I just need to convince my boss that I need a Saturday off in the summer to go fishing with it, I haven't had a Saturday off for the past 5 years Oh well, I took back the bits of hardware that I bought for the 12ft skiff that I was going to make so I have a nice $45 credit to West Marine, I figure I well use that to pick up a 12lb flutted mushroom anchor and a 50ft. anchor line. I suppose I should start another thread in the restoration section or have the mod move it for me.

im glad you mentioned the casting deck as i was thinking of putting one on the front of my grumman being a flat bottom i thought it might be stable enough maybe i wont try it now its my first boat so i dont know much about them

Nice find. Unless that old wound leaks, I wouldn't worry about it. As another poster said, coat the inside with some Gluvit...then maybe put a coat of paint on the outside for cosmetics. Should make a nice fishing rig...especially if you can find a little 7.5 to 10 hp twin to put on the transom.

Try craigslist for anchor and rode... I see them there all the time for really cheap.
