Was able to score this for next to nothing. I have no need for it currently but just wanted to have some spare parts if I ever need them. Its a little beat up and there is a crack in the housing that had a bunch of epoxy gooped all over it. I scraped off the epoxy and sanded the area around the crack to get a better look at it. Do you think this can be welded?

The lower came of a supposedly running boat but was sitting in a field and looked like it had been there for a few months at least. There were two lovely black widow spiders living inside of it that I discovered when I got it home. I quickly dispatched of those and started to clean it up. Rain had gotten into the oil channels and when I removed the drain and fill plugs, what little oil that did come out was milky/dirty.

The shift rod does move and it will go in and out of gear. My main concern is that the gears are in good shape so I need to take a look at them in case I ever need the spares. Is there an easy way to take this apart that does not require removal of the bearing housing and seal assembly that goes around the prop shaft? Will the drive shaft assembly come out if I remove the swivel bearing retainer and bearing housing and seal?

Thanks for your time. Here are some pictures:

Well, I think I found a solution for the crack. HTS-2000 aluminum brazing rods. Easy to use and Ive already got the mapp gas torch to apply it. Check out how impressive this stuff is:

Question for the gurus: My boat has a '79 stringer 800 hydro-mechanical shift system and, as I understand, the '84 lower I picked up is a mechanical shift. What are the differences between the two? I guess, to be more specific, what parts are different between the two lowers that define the hydro-mechanical vs. mechanical? I know the shift cables are different, but what else?
