Can anyone give me a quick run down of what I need to do after picking up my first boat on Saturday. Its a 20ft four winns.

Just want to know if it already has a plate what steps will i need to take for registration?

Do i need to go to sec of state?

If so What will I need to take with me?

Thank you I want to be prepared.

Your best bet is to check with your state's motor vehicle department website. Here in NY, the plate is registered to the owner that obtained it, which means I would have to go to my DMV to get one in my own name tyo be fully legal. YMMV.

Boat registrations in MI are done at your Secretary of State office. If this is a used boat, make sure you have the signed title for the boat and for the trailer when you go in.

For more information, Google "Boat Registration Michigan" (leave off the quotes)

Seller does not have title for the trailer.

Just need registration in Michigan for trailers.

If boat is not an outboard it should have a title.

If no registration is available you can usually get away with registering it as a homemade. Just need the weight of the trailer using a certified scale.

That trailer weight BS is a pain. How do I get the weight card certified if I can't launch the boat for another 4 weeks?

Re: Picking up first boat Trailer questions

Do you have a small utility trailer that is about the same weight? In my opinion it really doesn't matter for the weight because the license fee is a flat 75.00. Unless you get quite a lot heavier trailer. For your trailer i would definately say it will be 75. I weighed my utility for a weight to license my boat trailer. i know it's technically wrong but who is the victim? The state gets their license fee and I don't have to try to get an empty trailer to a certified scale.
