ok i am thinking of building a small mini boat for my 25hp merc. I really like the picklefork design and im going for speed but wondering about the pros and cons on the two hull designs i have heard that both are very stable and they will be about 12 feet in length if anyone has built either please let me know

thanks

A "picklefork" can refer to two entirely different hull designs ? a 3-point hydroplane or a catamaran/tunnel. In mini-boat terms, both are inland designs and not really suited for open water boating. A shallow or deep V hull will handle light to modest chop much better than a hydro or tunnel.

For all out speed, a 3-point hydro is probably your best bet. It will also be the least forgiving...

ok yes it was the 3 point hydro that i was refering to i was thinking the same thing with the stability at high speeds this will be going in a lake close to where i live thinking of a modified glen-l design theirs is for like a 10-15 hp but im gona extend it a bit and widen it also plus a transom mod to hold a 25 hp with a high pitch prop for it hopefully it will fly lol

I have a 10 foot Cougar Cub. I have had anywhere from 10 to 55 horsepower on her. It is a tunnel hull design with a slight picklefork in the bow. She handles all sorts of chop well, but I did horse her around and flipped her.

If you build a 3 point hydro, and if you are good with plans, modify the bow to picklefork it. It will trap less air and be a bit less likely to blow over.

It is called a picklefork because forks used for spearing pickles used to have only two tines. Thus, the two points in the bow resembles a pickle fork.

If you are really serious about building one, Google Hydroracer

Thanks for the description, Frank! Now I understand!

wow Bob that hydro turned out great! yea im just looking for something to have some fun in and i think the picklefork design is awsome! i thought about the rounded front but i weigh a bit and am kind of nervous so i think the stability and the little extra up front will help out alot for me been doing the math for balance and i think the pickle is winning out so farfound some plans that i like so far but i think that the glen-l design has the best so far plus they have them blown up already (not that big of a deal i can do the measurements lol) but i think this will be a awsome little show stopper and a cool lil conversation piece (none of the guys at work have even seen one be4 aside from the "big boys" (professional races on tv)
