A good prop shop (or welder familier with Marine applications) should be able to weld this no problem....

It has split in the threaded area from corrision

Best thing you can do is leave it ALONE ;)

As the only repiar i have seen is a shop that cuts the whole thing off and welds on a new one and machines it

this requires rebuilding the lower

If it were mine, I would put a large hose clamp around the area and tighten it down frequently. this may slow the spliting, but it seems your only option is replacing the lower housing otherwise.
Eventually I'd imagine this could really affect the upper housing also. If the gears begin running outta alignment, due to warpage.

That is a great find, unfortunatly the guy will not ship from RI to AL. Still a really good price, just for the lower. Thank you for posting.

I have considered the hose clamp route but it has no place to "bite" on the top and bottom of the prop-shaft housing due to the verticle fins that extend all the way to the base of the lower.

Welding to begin Friday at 11:00...

Where is the rubber seal you guys speak of?

Se

There is a BIG thread holding the drive toghter right were you want to weld

Right NOW you have a working drive that does not leak

After welding it is hard to say what will happen BUT it is unlikely the drive would come apart

By this time tomorrow, she'll be welded together.

I'll get some pics of that when complete.

Thanks again to everyone...

Well, got it welded and was asked to pay $20. Not a bad deal (if it holds). I think it is a really good job. Pictures look messy but it's strong, real strong.

Right then, well, taking it out tomorrow for a test. I'm going to shoot it with some flat black and let it go till next time.

I do appreciate everyone's input in my problem.

Now, where is that rattle can?

Re: Pics of cracked Lower Housing

I cracked my housing in a big way three years ago.
I reversed my hydraulic trim lines when my trim pump failed.
Replaced the pump and wham! I snaped the upper housing trailing edge clean in half. Long story short - a local marine welder made it like new again.
You'll be glad you welded it.

Tig, Yes, is there anything else???!!! Hahaha...

I agree the pics are kinda "rough". It was dark and the flash was the only light source.

I have since painted it. Yes, I will get a few more shots of the painted finished product after our cruise tomorrow.

Also planning a new thread to show the old boat off.

Night!

Re: Pics of cracked Lower Housing

When I worked at a MerCruiser dealer in '91 we got those tig welded at our place the redid the props all the time. Very common place for them to crack on a #1 (later called the Alpha 1) drive. Especially when the unit has lived in salt water as most of ours had.

Missing swimmer at Ditto changed our plans to head over to Ditto, so we went to Joe Wheeler instead. Out for a few hours with the kids and storms forced us back. Prop/drive in great condition even after hitting something 50 yrds from shore (sand bar??).

Welding works so far.
