Hi all, cut into the deck today. What a mess. stringers are wicked rotted. Glad I decided to do it now though, because I would be out striper fishing and after seeing that deck, I know I made the right decision. Thankfully I have a guy helping me who is extremely experienced, and we have our work cut out for us.

Some pics

Just wanted to share my agony.

Scuda

Oh joy Scuda. Looks like you found yourself an archeological dig site there. Wouldn't it be nice if you could pick your boat up from the factory, build the stringers and floor the right way then send it back for them to finish the cosmetics.

Boomyal, you are SO right. I mean I am not sure if this deck has been replaced or not. However the boat is an 86 and I have always thought Proline was the average or a little above and two of the stringers had peices of standard UNTREATED or glassed 1x6 pine!! I couldn't beleive my eyes. And the deck had been fiberglassed only on the top not the bottom. Like the guy I am building it with said, at least now I will know it is strong.

Nothing wrong with untreated. If it is sealed properly with a couple of coats of resin, it should not rot. If you are going to use treated, make sure it is dry. Treated wood can be up to 25% wet. Some untreated wood can be up to 15% wet too. Anything from 4-8% (my guess) is good. Buy the wood from a place that stores it inside. (I found this out the hard way!)Test with a moisture meter to make sure, a good woodworking shop will have one, otherwise 'glass won't stick, floor won't be rigid because everything down there will be moving around.
I am not using treated in my piece of Flotsam because everything will be sealed tight enough to make Tupperware proud of it.
By the way, when you mention striper fishing, is that the same kind fish as the huge one I saw on CNN the other day? 50 lbs?

Scuda11,

Have you thought about doing stringers using foam core instead of wood? It would probably out live us all.

I prefer the picture with the can of coors light sitting on the side with a measuring tape. That speaks volumes, especially when you look over and see what looks like where someone went to town with a hammer on waterlog - rotted wood lol!

S

Not as heavy as they look. Placed the 1/2 in plywood in the remaining stringer tabs and then PT the side for better mounting and pressure dispersion.

Considering the weight I took OUT of it, this is grande!!

Stringers, those are bridge abuttments! Looks good, the peace of mind will be more than worth it. Every time I launch off of a three or four foot swell and slam into the water, I thank the Lord I rebuilt my rig.

That almost looks like mud you bedded those stringer in with. What did you use to get the dark color?

PL 477 heavy duty exterior construction adhesive. Very very strong in my opinion.

Scuda,

Those look like 2X6 stringers. Is that what they are?

I don't really follow what you did when removing the old stringers. Did you leave the fiberglass tabbing in place and simply dig out the old stringer wood? Then did you use the old tabs and put the new stringers in?

Re: Pics of deck rebuild-phase 3

Hi Safari.

Yes that's exactly what we did. The tabs were still in real good shape believe it or not, so we went with them. They may or may not be glassed a little, its very strong as it is. We used 1/2 Plywood in the stringer tabs, then 2x4 and 2x6 sides to the stringers so to speak, to allow for more area to attach the deck, as well as help spread out pressure. The outside stringers had 3/4 in in them, so we thinned another 1/2 inch and doubled up the outsides. I usually fish in pretty rough water, so I favored the side of strength over maybe a little speed. But like I said, I don't think I will. I did ok before, and I think we pulled out about 300lbs of crap, and am putting in about 100 lbs with much more strength.

I was amazed at how the boat up on the blocks, off the trailer, once all the water and dryrotted wood was out. Amazing, the deep V wasn't was deep! Looked normal.
