Brian, looks great. You've got a good project going there. I'm looking forward to following your progress. I'm working on my little fishing boat, but I hope to find a boat similar to yours that I can take my wife and kids out in, my current boat won't hold more than 2 people.

brian ...when you put in the new stringer...make sure there ample drainage past that funky little box....so the water can get out !

Re: pics of my boat project

yeah thats what i was going to ask about next. should i drill holes through the wood that im going to line the box with and fiber them in or should i try to keep it water tight. i took foam out of it and im going to put the blue wall board foam back in it. when i put the foam back in should i leave an area by the stringer for the water to flow to the back of the boat. the box is where the drain plug goes.

when i fiberglass the stringer in after bedding it in pl9000 how many layers of glass should i use and should i use one full peice in each side all the way down the stringer or could i use bunch of peices and just over lap them all the way down

im kind of new to fiberglassing i have done it before but not on this scale

Re: pics of my boat project

the fourth picture down. what do you think happened there. when the floor was in. there was a plastic cover above that. you could pop the cover off and look at all the soaked foam and water. do you think that it was a repair at one time. it doesnt look like anything happened to the hull on the out side of the hull at that spot. should i grind that spot down so the stinger will sit better in the groove. or should i cut the stringer to fit above it and leave it alone.

Re: pics of my boat project

alright i did some gringing today. it was a hole at one time i ground all of it out. then i got to the fiberglass and noticed that there was bondo so i started to grind all of that out. i never heard of using bondo to fill in a spot then fiberglass over it. should i repair it like that or just build up layers of glass. by the way it still leaked before i ground the epoxy out. i knew there was a hole around there somewhere and thats where it was at. more than i wanted to get into. but im going to finish it right. that way i know i will have a good boat when im done.

Re: pics of my boat project

Use the PL premium, not the PL9000, there's a big difference.

Re: pics of my boat project

ill let rvr answer the pl question...as it can get easy or complicated....

as far as the glass....currently.....popular glass wrap is 1708 x 2...it doesnt matter if it is one long wrap or smaller ones....(smaller wraps are easyer)...just make sure that cloth is touching cloth...(resin by itself is super weak....

we are currently devising a method to wrap the stringers...instead of just glassing the sides...then the top....a full wrap will be stronger....but glass doesnt like to go round corners...so its tough....

but your still a little ways away from that....

cheers

Re: pics of my boat project

Is anyone else looking at these pictures thinking what I'm thinking?

Easy! One stringer..that's it?! Look how clean it is in there! ONE FRIGGIN STRINGER! OH how I wish! :D

That's looking real good though Brian. Keep it up, you'll have it done before you know it! I'd glass that hole back up. Just cut little layers and just keep working it until you get the thickness you want and give it a good layup around the hole.
