I thought some my enjoy some pics of the so called new floor in the boat I just bought. At a first glance I took the other day thought I might have been ok but was very wrong. Looks like who ever did this laid some fiberglass over rotted wood and just dumped a gallon of resin over everything. And I do mean everything all the leaves and dirt in the pictures is glazzed to the bottom with resin. They did add alittle foam to one side ?

Uh-oh. Looks like you have a job ahead of you. And it also looks like you've already started in on it. Bad luck.

Since you're able to type clearly, I'm assuming that you didn't pay a huge sum for this boat. Right?

310.00 at least the old Mercury runs great for now anyways. Yea it's a project alright spent a few hours after pics were taken yesterday and a few more today and don't seem like I've gotten very far. it's hard to tell in pictures but in some spots the resin is 4 to 5 inches thick and just poured everywhere. I'm very close to scraping the boat and keeping the motor and trailer. I have all the treated lumber I could possibly need except of course the most expensive needed Marine Ply. Oh well been looking for a new hobby !

Well you know what you have...... the question is can you afford the time to grind and sand the mess out? If the rest of the hull is worth it go for it...

geez, did they even read the label? No excuse for that crap. Just another yahoo doing a crappy job. Then trying to pass it off as a complete repair/rebuild. I do believe they knew exactly what they were doing.....

well the way I see it you could get most of the crap out of the way, seeing how your already on the inside and past the tough stuff.. grinders work very fast.. just be careful not to go too deep.. cdx works VERY well and is cheep cheep cheep...
honestly if your only planning on running the boat a few years I would just clean up the the poor job on the foam.. re-enforce the soggy wood(or remove it), replace the flooring, pour foam the hell out of it.. seal the new wood and get boating!
If it's not a restoration.. then what the hell? I also learned how to do this the hard way with a cover job of bondo and (I kid you not) paper.
I took the grinder to the outside edge of the floor where the floor meets the hull and removed some outrageous newspaper, resin and rotten wood.
It took me a few weeks to slowly learn and do trial and error till I finally got her in the water..
I was very proud of my boat by time I got her done.
Good Luck!

Why foam?
Save your soda pop bottles, and throw them in there.
The Bondo knows.

Thanks for all your replies ! The way I look at it though it's my faught I've owned enough cars to no you never take someones word for anything and you never buy something you no nothing about. But to late now I own it and am actually alittle imbarresed that I let my self get taken like that. I gave up on the restoration idea cannot really afford it right now. I'm just going to attempt to do the floor right and alittle top paint and call it quits I think. I've managed to get a good majority of the wood out and am starting to feel alittle better about it. I've done quite a bit of fiberglass work but nothing anywhere near this scale.

For $310 you did alright if you got a running motor and a good trailer. You just have to decide how bad you want the boat and how much work and time you are willing to put into it.
Since you do have a running motor, and a trailer, finding a better hull may be the easy thing, provided it's not in the same shape.
I find lots of boats with no trailers and many with no motor. I generally just do a quick evaluation on the hull and decide whether to salvage what's good and scrap it or to keep or sell it.

I scrap or give away as many as I keep or sell. The value is in the motor and trailer, especially if it's a larger trailer. The motors always sell, whether whole or piece by piece. I never turn down a free or cheap boat if I think I can either fix or use either the hull, motor, or trailer. What I can't use, I simply pass on or sell. If they're rotted or don't sell, off to the landfill they go.

free boats are everywhere..but boats in general are always about maintenance. Even the new ones NEED to be cleaned and polished to keep them looking good.
I agree about the foam, but I like the stuff and it quiets the pounding down if the boat rides hard.
glockbwb.. cdx is super cheap! the resin and matting will cost you a bit..skip the gel coat and paint it instead with epoxy paint and grit.
If you don't want to foam it.. then don't, it isn't necessary it's just my preference.
Don't be shy friend.. give it a shot! I bet you'll have it done in a week or two and you have nothing to loose outside of a few bucks you spend on material.. in fact if you want to leave the leaves and trash.. do so.. its all glass and wont rot.. esp, if its sealed up in resin.
As long as you don't damage the hull the boat will go together very easy! and check those stringers out closely.. are they rotten? are you sure? maybe they are just blackened with age..
Guys help me here.. the stringers are most likely oak if I'm not mistaken and oak turns black with water and age. As grimy as that hull is on the inside as long as it is sound then your OK.
Try to save the old pieces of wood you took from the floor as templates to the new pieces you make, or re-use them if the new wood is in good shape.

CDX 3/8 inch is like 12 bucks at HOME DEPOT and Henry's 900 is a joint sealer that flexes an unbelievable amount..

Price list
CDX, Home Depot $11.98 X3 $35.94
Tube of Henry's 900, Home Depot $ 5.99 (not necessary)
Glass fibers at IBoats $27.19 X4 $108.
Resin w/ hardner at IBoats (gallon) $40.02
Various supplies to do the job $100.
Total without your state tax $289.95 rough est.

http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/ (is just one place to buy glass products)
http://www.iboats.com/Maintenance_Boat_Repair $27.19 - 6oz. Fiberglass Cloth, 44" X 108"
http://www.iboats.com/Resin_Boatyar...8427514--**********.539251034--view_id.165305

Most of the glass work deep in that hull is as sloppy as allot of manufacturers do it, they figure 99.9% of the people buying they're boats will never see that part of their boat!
If your in Cumberland County Maine I might even help you!
