Re: Pics of the 75 SS.

Well we all seem to be getting restless for project updates and asking questions about people who have vanished so I thought I'd check in. Life has thrown me a few curves lately (elder-care duties) so boat time has been minimal. However, slow and steady progress on the boat in happening and reading everyone's stories keeps me sane. I've been rewiring, replacing switches, and making up a sub-panel for a marine radio I got from a buddy who upgraded. All the stuff that keeps a boat reliable. So - this is not a major rebuild but hey - it's a painting thread.

I've removed all the major hardware (but not all those canvas snaps - I couldn't face it since they are all new) and sanded down the entire exterior. That green is just not growing on me, but it looks like it's growing on SOMETHING!. I then filled all the extra holes by sanding the areas to bare metal, burring up the hole, and filling it with Marine JB Weld. The repairs sanded down nicely.

I then washed it all down with vinegar and water and put Interlux Primocon (zinc chromate) over the bare spots and repairs, and then sanded it down to flatten it again. Next was a thin coat of Interlux PreKote one part primer and then another fine sanding. That's where she sits now.

The Fraser Valley has just descended into a record cold spell for the coming week so I'll have to wait out the weather gods, but the next stage will be to coat the boat again with a 50/50 mix of PreKote and the Top coat and then a final sanding before the top coat goes on.

She'll be cream with a dark green top deck, both in Interlux Bright sides paint. I'll send more pics when that's complete but here's where she's at today. Hope the painting review is helpful to some one down the road.

Well I never thought it would take so long, but life is what happens when you're making other plans. Anyway - the SS is fully repainted on the outside now in cream and green. I've added a marine radio for safety case since I go out on the open ocean and losing power can pose a real threat. Also added a Lowrance Elite chartplotter/sounder/fishfinder. Last Thursday I took the day off and head out with my son-in-law for the o-fish-ul first splash. We put in on the Fraser River, around the Deas Slough and head out to the Sands Heads and Steveston. You want to know your bouys and traffic lanes out there, as the freighters are huge and only a small portion of this vast river is all that deep at low tide. Having the plotter was great and it was fun to see it in action, using a plit screen between out chart and the sounding.

On the way home the Merc stalled but restarted fine - only to stall again. So - we manually pumped the fuel up the line with the primer bulb and got home OK, but I'll be looking into that this weekend. Hopefully just a clogged inline filter or something. It sat for a long time with no Stabil.

We were passed by a pod of killer whales at one point and had three visits from thieving seals as well, but I can't resist the faces on those little guys.

Next trip is to an inland lake for some calmer fishing with no tides and commercial traffic to watch out for and we'll see how the engine behaves.

Attached are pics of the boat and the old man in the sea.

Ha- yes that old Seagull motor is not as old as she looks actually, and I have a few decades on her. Fool proof little 3hp. The antenna doesn't show up in that docking shot oddly enough, although you can se the wiring coming up to it. Weird. It's on the drivers side bow rail. I inherited a Shakespeare unit, and have no idea what model it is, but it works well enough. It's about 40 inches and on a swivel mount for towing and storage.
