Going by the decals on the cowling, you've got a 1965...
Nice pics guys, but you're killing the dial-up folks with the photo sizes.

Jump here..... Photo Resizer (Free program) and download the program. Resize the pics and upload back to photobucket. ;)

Re: Pictures of motor

The engine should have a 1" X 3" plate near the top of the transom bracket on the port side.
It will have the model and serial numbers on it.
Also, on the engine block, behind the spark plug, there will be a Welch plug, about the size of a quarter.
If it has two sets of numbers, the first is the model number.
If not, the single number will be the serial number, specific to your motor

I think it says "LOCK" and "UNLOCK" Rick.... :)

Model number is either on the welch plug or the port transom bracket....as usual.... :)

In the photos I cannot see under the tiller on the transom bracket, which is where my 1965 plate is.

My Welch plug serial number is behind the lower spark plug and from the photograph it does not look like either plug is filled on this motor.

Ah, I was comparing it to a later engine.
EDIT: Oh, I think we're talking about the same spot. Never mind.

Thanks for all the great responces and please let me apologize for the big pictures, i did infact try and delete the first posting because of the size and redid them with just the links to a free photo site.If it is not too much trouble can and would one of the admins please delete the pictures that are too large. I thought I had done that by deleteing my own post this afternoon. Very sorry for any problems all.

Hey Chief...no apology needed..it happens. I was just offering a suggestion to resize the pics, heck, I'm not the photo police here!. Some dial up folks might have gotten frustrated waiting for the pics to load and moved on to another thread. Actually, sometimes it BETTER to have larger pics to show fine details! The guys here on iboats are a great bunch, and always willing to offer a helping hand. Please feel free to ask any questions that may arise.
Scott, same goes your way, no apology necessary, heck, I've done it myself.
I'll take this opportunity to apologize to anyone I might have offended with my suggestion!

Re: Pictures of motor

Hi Chief...

As per your Q's... 6 hp's are great little motors... I've got a mid 70's version that I use for trolling... it'll putt putt smoothly for hours and hours barely using any gas... They take 50:1 gas:eek:il mix. You say you're new to OB's... rule number 1 is never start it out of water. The rubber water pump impeller will self destruct in moments without water (happens before the engine heats up). If you want to start it at home, put the leg in a garbage can of water. If it's new to you, you should change the lower unit gear oil, and the water pump impeller, and probably spark plugs. Keep the old ones in the boat (and wrench) as spares.... Lower unit oil and impeller are not hard to do, but a service manual helps alot especially the first time.

Also, you should pick up a pack of extra drive pins. The drive pin goes through the prop shaft and holes on the prop. If you hit something underwater, the drive pin should break before the gears (they are also called "shear pins" because that's what's supposed to happen). Anyway you can change a broken one easily enough, but you should have spares in the boat.

On older motors like these, the coils often have cracks that can cause ignition problems... They're under the flywheel, and you'll need a puller to access them (harmonic balancer puller works good). Parts are still availbable, so no worries if you need something.

Edit---
I just read the brochure... funny.. I'm pretty sure mine has a shear pin... it says the '65 doesn't (?) Of course I might be mixing my 6hp with other johnny-rudes I have (or had) ?

Re: Pictures of motor

That's not a shear pin. It's a drive pin dont-cha-know? Or at least that's OMC's claim. I guess they never shear! :D :)
Really, that rubber hub really does help with nuiscence shearing compared to the cheaper outboards of the day that used solid hubs.

On another note, It's good to see we're a bunch of polite decent folk. :)

Re: Pictures of motor

I love those little motors........I have the 1962 version.

I second the opinion of keeping spare plugs and a wrench in the boat.

My favorite sales pitch in that whole ad is
If you like knobs, there is a manual choke
I see you are using photobucket to host your pictures......I have not used that site, but can say that if you use imageshack to host your pictures, you can resize them before you upload them at preselected sizes. I generaly just pic the webpage option, or the 15" monitor option and then use the url for a thumbnail.

Re: Pictures of motor

funny Paul... I didn't realize that "new speak" marketing was common in '65 :)

so yes, my original advice stands... get some spare "drive pins" that are unlikely to shear (unless you hit a submerged object firmly) :D
