Hi guys,

Mercruiser 4.3L 1988 with a Mercarb 2BBL Serial No 3304 9565 7Y03 (1987 3rd November)

There's a bit of metal missing.....

This could have been missing for years or just recently, but is it terminal, normal, maybe sometimes or shouldn't ever happen sort of thing?

It's not missing, someone has tightened the flame arrester to tight and broken that. It will be OK just don't tighten it so tight that it breaks any further.

Yep, overtightened... As you're in the UK, I suspect getting a replacement will not be easy... Use a new nyloc nut on the flame arrester and only just nip it up... Or you will be replacing it....

Cheers

Chris....

Cheers Woody/Chris.

Sounds like the answer then, thanks guys. I didn't think of that mainly because the rod and cross member that holds arrestor in place is quite solid, whereas the arrestor and cover are thinnish material, I thought they would have buckled first. Glad it should be OK though.

Chris, I'll see you in Feb '13 for a beer! :) Our friend from Perth is here with us visiting her folks so have arranged the next trip.
