Pier permit

Anyone ever heard of a permit required to build a 5ft pier into a small bayou in Texas.<br /><br />In the back of the nieghborhood, there is a small bayou. There are already pilings in the water, about 5 ft away from the shoreline. Everything else is gone.<br /><br />Was thinking of proposing to the neighborhood association of building a new pier there for kids to fish from.<br /><br />Anyone know if a permit would be required?<br /><br />I was just gonna get two landscape timbers and build a plank then lower it onto the pilings and screw it in. Dont care if it lasts long, just want it cheap.<br /><br />Ken

Don't know Ken, but around here, anything you build has to have a building permit.

in my area to build anything in or within 25 ft of tidal or coastal waters requires a corp of engineering and cama permits as well as county and/or town permits, the fines for non compliance are added daily and they dont care who built it the owner of the deed gets the citation, after 30 days of non-compliance the federal or local govts can contract for the removal and attach the cost as a lein on the deed.<br /> but thats here on the east coast.

I'm sure you have the best of intentions, but that didn't sound quite right.... <br /><br />Around here, if you are just improving an existing structure, you need no paperwork. Since the pilings are already there, that would qualify as existing structure here. <br /><br />If it's a new structure, better bend over and get ready to deal with the EPA.

Went fishing there today, had a couple of nibbles.<br /><br />The pilings are definately there and look in pretty good shape.<br /><br />Technically it isnt a new build, just a repair of an old one.<br /><br />Ken

in my area it depends on the amount of reconstruction nessasary. if the damage is beyond a certain percentage it will require a new permit and be required to be in compliance with any later codes from the original permit or construction date.<br /> last I looked the pier construction regulations in kitty hawk were maybe 20 pages long and even the guy that wrote them cant interpet them. between town,county,state CAMA and corp of engineers piers are getting very hard to build here without mega bux.<br /> gone are the days of the 55 gallon drum and plank piers we made as a kid.
