Ping flooded while downloading...

I use bittorrent to download free torrent files and zip files from various websites.

Now it seems that every time I download something (using bittorrent), no matter what type of file or from what website, I'm immediately ping flooded until I disconnect, wait 24 hours for my ISP to give me a new IP, and reconnect. I've called Cox a half dozen times and they say unless I can get an actual IP it's happening from, they can't do anything. Well, I downloaded a firewall that gave me the IP, and it's obviously just spoofed IP's, as each one is different, and there are hundreds per minute.

Is bittorrent a known malware program? I didn't think it was. I just ran spybot and adaware and spybot found a few things, but nothing major, and ad-aware came up empty.

Do you think this is coming in from the outside, or is it originating from some hidden program inside my computer? The Cox guy swears its from inside my machine, but AVG finds nothing, neither do the above spyware programs, and it's only when I begin using bittorrent, at no other time does it give me trouble.

Any ideas?

You download a "torrent" file from a web server. The BitTorrent program uses this file to tell it what you want to download. BitTorrent then proceeds to download whatever it was you wanted. It downloads bits and pieces from hundreds of other users that have BitTorrent and the file you want. At the same time, others users are downloading bits and pieces from YOU. This is more than likely the activity you're logging. Check the documentation and options in BitTorrent so YOU can control the number of connections you want to allow and which of the items you download you want to share.

i386, I don't think it's the activity for one reason, it doesn't stop after I stop using bittorrent. It will continue for days, or weeks, after. Even rebooting the computer doesn't help. The IP has to change.

But I do understand your explanation of bittorrent and I totally agree, but I've had it for a while now and it's only recently started killing my computer.

alot of zip files are badware; learned that after 2 reformats, now, no zips, no problems. Seems all the anti's can't handle the zip file, as you open it.

I suppose it's possible it's a DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service Attack). Are you able to determine which ports they're hitting you on?

Um, yea something's up. I opened my BitTorrent just to look at the settings and my connection was also smoked in a matter of minutes. I had to reset my router. I think something's "going on" and affecting a lot of people.

what router do you have? have you reset factory password? if not you need to start there, and re-program

Hmmm, I stopped using the Bittorrent client awhile back (bandwidth issues) and went to the newest Ares P2P.
Just downloaded a torrent and had no problems.....

It's all good. I changed the default password the minute I installed the router. I should have said power-cycled rather than reset. This was done to clear the routing table.

I'm not going to mess with it any more tonight as I'm playing games online and wife is using the Internet too. Don't wanna get her started. 8)

Bittorrent client gives permission to others to download the file you are downloading from you while you are downloading it, anyone useing Bittorrent client to download the same file that has less of it than you do will have access to the file on your computer, if you have less than they do of the file you have access to the file amount that they have. speeds up downloads but uses a lot of bandwidth.

Hmmm, I stopped using the Bittorrent client awhile back (bandwidth issues) and went to the newest Ares P2P.
Just downloaded a torrent and had no problems.....

I just downloaded Ares. It works ok, but I still get ping flooded, or I should say, this is more like a ping drizzle. It's not nearly as bad as it used to be but it's worse than it was before I downloaded and attempted to use the program. Instead of hundreds of ping rejections per minute, my firewall is showing about 70-80 now.

Make-model......?
Firewall name?

Did you install the program from the link I posted to see if you have any unusual ports open?

Are you sure it's a ping and not just traffic? Can you block the protocol ICMP with your router?

i run an SNMP logging client and my router gets pinged from all over the world all the time

I have no router and my firewall is Zonealarm. After I close those programs and get a new IP, it will sit dormant for hours without one ping request.

It's something to do with something! (sounds intelligent I know)

I just downloaded ZA free application and you can block ping with it.
In ZA go to program control>programs>click add and go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and look for ping.exe once added you can click on it in the programs area of ZA and block it.

From the ZA help file if you have the secuity suite:

Configuring ZoneAlarm security software to allow ping messages
If your ISP uses ICMP echo (or ping) messages for connectivity checks, configure ZoneAlarm security software to allow ping messages from the Internet Zone.

To configure ZoneAlarm security software to allow ping messages:

Select Firewall|Main.
In the Internet Zone area, click Custom.
Select check box labeled Allow incoming ping (ICMP echo).
Click OK.
Set the security level for the Internet Zone to Medium.
