I replaced the clutch dog and drive shaft in my 83 50 hp Evinrude. However it didn;t last no more than 20 miles. When I disassembled the unit I found the pinion gear completly stripped and the end of the prop shaft bearing carrier worn down. What did I screw up? Also there is 2teeth worn off forward gear.<br />Thanks for the help,Tom

May have had worn down gear lobes to start with.In any case, you'll need to rebuild the lower unit with a complete new set of gears as per manual instructions if you choose to rebuild. There are specific tolerances that need to be set to have them mesh properly when engaged.May be able to locate a good used lower unit and save yourself some trouble.

Tom: One thing that comes to mind, possibly, or probably, you did not get the prop shaft bearing carrier clear down to it's seat. This would keep the reverse gear out of full engagement with the pinion gear. This would also mess up the clearance with the prop, and give the damage you discribe. You said there are a couple teeth off the forward gear, what does reverse look like? Keep in mind, with all those hardened, and I do mean hard, steel parts going through that gearcase. You are looking at a complete bearing replacement, along with the gear's. This is just one of those exspensive lesson's we learn.
