Can I use this tool for shimming the pinion gear/shaft on an SX-M outdrive?

OMC Pinion Shimming Tool Part 3850599 | eBay

PinionTool.jpg

It looks exactly like the one pictured in the original Volvo Workshop manual, but the P/N should be 3855098.

If the tool in the auction was for shimming a dog clutch OMC Cobra, I believe it looks completly different.

I have a couple of empty lower gear housings laying around, along with shafts, gears, new bearings etc. My plan is to assemble two identical lower gearhousings with 17/30 ratio.

Yes, I have tried shimming gears before....

Re: Pinion shimming on an SX drive

It appears they are two different tools. OMC and Volvo both had a tool 3850599 according to the PN conversion chart I have. It was used for shimming the pinion gear, but only on the HU model lower units. Both are good numbers and both still available.
The older and newer manuals shows the use of the 3855098 fixture, and the 3850599 isn't mentioned.
I would guess they did something different in the HU models.

Re: Pinion shimming on an SX drive

I think you are right, they are two different tools. My guess is that the only difference is the length.

I have an SX-M and an SX-S drive next to each other in the workshop, and the SX-S drive is approx 1/2 inch longer than the SX-M. This difference is achieved by adding more material above the cavitation plate, as far as I can see.

So I assume that the vertical drive shaft on the SX-S drive is longer as well and therefore needs another shim tool.

If the HU model year covers the SX-S drive, the conclusion would be that tool No 3850599 is too long, since I have to shim SX-M drives (shorter lowerunit)
