I was playing in my usual Tues night basketball game and took a swipe at the ball and my finger felt strange.Looked at my hand and my pinkie was going in the wrong direction at the middle knuckle.Bent back I guess. No pain at all so I took it and pushed it back the way it should be .Still no pain at all .Straightened my fingers to look at it and it popped to the opposite angle again.Man it looked weird pointing the opposite way.I pushed it baCK TO the normal way again, taped it so it would not go that way again and kept playing.Still no pain at all.Took the tape off when I got home and still no pain but a little stiff.I was able to move it in all the usual ways with no problem or pain.Taped it again and went to bed. This morning it is a little stiff and tender around the middle knuckle. Not swollen or bruised. My DR. is gone for the holiday and was curious if anyone had any experienced suggestions. My plan was to keep it taped for the rest of the week and see how it goes.Anybody? Is there a doctor in the house?? Happy Thanksgiving all !! Charlie

Put the pinkie back in place and tape it to the next finger as you would a splint. Leave it like that for a couple of days before you remove the tape for a test drive. You may need to do the splint thing for a time if it don't react favorably at first. ;)

you can tape it and you'll be fine. but chances are it will bother you down the road. if that doesn't matter, then forget it. you may have torn a ligament or two, and doctor could let you. but finger surgery is tricky and isn't always successful.

i'm lazy, so i would just tape it as needed.

Update !! Pinkie has been taped since Tues Basketball.Had the tape off Thursday morning while I helped my wife peel potatoes.Heard the starch actually helps with soreness.Still a little stiff and more sore than before but not terrible.Taped it up again and made the mistake of slapping my wife on her rock hard buns and felt a jolt of pain like I was electrocuted. It only lasted a split second. It was the only time I can remember her laughing after slapping her buns.

This year, I had a player come up to me holding his hand. The kids screamed: "Coach, look at his fingers!" The big offensive tackle held up his hand and every finger was pointing in the opposite direction. It seems one of the opponents defensive linemen stepped on his hand. Luckily, it was a muddy field, and his hand sunk into the ground instead of breaking. Our trainer "Popped" all of the fingers back into place.....The kid missed 5 plays.

Re: Pinkie finger joint bent back

I had the same problem about 10 years ago. My middle knuckle would bend back and "lock". With the joint locked I broke the tip of my pinkie finger a couple of times playing basketball and decided to get something done.

I had to have surgery to repair the completely torn "tendon" that keeps your finger from bending back to far. Still have a nice scar.
I was in and out of the hospital in a few hours. Hurt like hell after the anestesia quit working. I waited until it hurt to take the painkillers they gave me. Big mistake I suffered for about 45 minutes until the drugs started working. No pain a couple of days later.

Re: Pinkie finger joint bent back

Get a load of this !!! Happened to run into my vet the other day and he asked what happened to my pinkie...I told him and he recomended that I remove the tape for good or I will never regain my flexability and will eventually get arthritis in the finger. He said our joints are not too different from some animals. So now I am getting medical advice from my vet..??  Finger feels good for only a week of healing.Still a little stiff and sore but the tape is off and I am using the finger (on my vets advice of course).Charlie
