I need to replace my fuel pump and the existing pump has some sort of red sealant on the bottom threads. Is this "Pipe Dope", and if not, what could it be, and is it required? My manual doesn't say to use anything on it....

FWIW: Fuel fittings I have got from Mercruiser have a red sealant on the threads.

I always use a small amount of thread sealer on fittings with pipe thread. Fittings that are not pipe thread, such as a compression fitting do not seal via the tapered thread and sealant is not required. Don't use too much because the excess can squeeze out and get into your fuel.

Have a great day

Probably something similar to Loctite's Aviation Gasket Sealant. I used that on my fuel pump installation and it says it's good for fuel situations.
