I am looking at picking up a used ski boat, I found one I really like, it is a 1989 Pismo Skier... its in great condition, runs like a champ... my only concern is the limited amount of information I can find online about them. Anyone know about these boats, thoughts/opinions?

Wow, it looks remarkably similar to my old malibu skier of the same era, right down to the interior. Must have been a small operation that only lasted a few years.

If you like it, there is no wood rot, and the drive line checks out, then go for it. I bet it will be a hell of a competition ski boat.

Is the drive line mercruiser inboard, PCM, or some other? That is what will matter for parts, not the boat manufacture.

Yup, all the direct drive tournament ski boats are, but some are supplied by PCM, some Indmar, some mercruiser -- same block, just different parts.

Its a great set up -- basic 350 v8, berg warner single speed tranny, direct drive to the prop.

Its basically a mastercraft set up if you are familiar with mastercrafts.

Search for Ski centurion, malibu, ski brendela, or sanger competition ski boats around the same year and you will get a lot more ideas of how the boat is set up.

Thats good to know, is the PCM, Indmar, or mercruiser, is any of those something I should be weary of or are they all pretty good?

Here is some pictures of the boat, I really like it

Nope, they are all good, and its a good set up to keep running for the long haul. You need to be more concerned about any wood rot in the floor of stringers. The boat does look good, though, so hopefully they owner got it sufficiently dry between usages.

Is that a barefoot boom laying on the floor, or a wakeboard pylon?

I like the set up, with the open bow.

Get it mechanically checked out and/or surveyed to see if you are facing any wood or structural issues.

Ok, I would think your best comparison would be a 1989 Malibu Sunsetter.

Your second best would be a 1989 Mastercraft Tri-Star.

The Mastercrafts will go for more because they had no wood in them back then and the Mastercraft name. Malibu would also have name recognition, but some of those old Malibu's have had to have some wood and floor replacement. They are a boat that sits low in the water and can do a power slide, plus a lot of wet skiers get in and out of them, and the back seat sits on the floor, holding a lot of moisture (I had an 87 Malibu Skier -- so I speak from experience). That, and some boat owners sin by leaving them outside, uncovered.

In my area, a nice looking 88 Malibu Sunsetter was listed at $4800 on our local craigslist. I don't know what it actually sold for, though.

Here is my $0.02 guess: (realizing I have not been in a competition ski boat for a couple of years, as I am in an IO now, but I watch and plan when the kids will get into skiing to get back into one:

No wood rot and engine/drive train in good working order, V8 had good, equal compression in all cylinders, steering cable not binding, interior good condition: $5000 - $8000

Knock of $1000 for a bad interior.

Cut the price to $3800-$4200 for bad compression indicating the motor will be to be replaced soon, but everything else on the boat being in good condition.

Cut some money off if the steering gets tough in either direction.

If there is wood rot, then you need the help of the restoration guys.

I would suggest you also spend some time at the only inboards site (http://www.onlyinboards.com/Types-of-Inboards/direct-drive.html)

All those pictures and none of the engine? That would be a good shot.
