I am getting a extra 1979 80hp merc it has low compression on 1 cyl. I am planning on using it as parts but if it is in good shape other than the low compression i might replace the piston or ring and keep it as a spare motor. what do you think i should do? i am getting it for $75 with controls.....

not a bad deal .... if you planning on opening the motor anyway, you will see what needs to be replaced ..... you can then just as well hoan the cylinders and add new rings to all if need be .......

Who cares! Controls worth $200...( and the open the motor comment is a little more than suggested..popping a Merc apart and rebuild aint no easy task if you have never done one...just the rebuild parts will set ya back, and putting back the crank with 4 pistons attached in 4 different positions will have ya tearing yer hair out.). Try a decarb first....

Duff, If you remove the transfer port cover on the bad cylinder, you can inspect the cylinder, piston and rings. It will take you 5 minutes to see what is wrong.

Again.... it don't matter... when you crack it open all will be revealed. Replace a bad piston and re-ring them all. game over.
