1984 Evinrude 50 hp is what I am running, so I was out on the lake near WOT.... Then the engine died, and idled horribly and would not run... So good ol trolling motor got me back to the landing!!
Removed the spark plugs and I noticed the top cylinder plug had the ground electrode pinched up against the center electrode.
Removed the cylinder head, the top of the piston had some metal that was stuck into it. I was thinking a reed got sucked in..
Checked the reeds, they are all there and dont appear damaged, was able to look at the skirt of the piston by removing the reeds. Noticed a nice little chuck of the skirt had broken off.
I lucked out, there is no damage to the cylinder walls that I can see, there is no build up or carbon, they are both pretty clean!!
Ordered a piston replacement kit for $62 on ebay
Also figured I minus well replace the other rings on the other cylinder, ordered set of rings ebay $20
I would like to do this the Right way the first time, any sugestions or things I need to know before installing the new goods? I dont think the cylinders need to be honed because of there good condition.
Can I just oil up the piston and rings, install them and fire the motor up??
Also, is this just part of normal wear and tear? Or is there something else that caused the skirt to break??
Thanks for all the help, I truly appreciate everyones time!!!!!!
