"Pitting" on the Mating Surfaces

I'm seeing some pitting on the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and the head bearing assembly. 200 Evinrude, 1996.

Not major, but surprising to see that. I have older cars that look better.

What causes that? There's no rust, just surface abrasions and pitting, apparently. Some of it looks like baked on shellac or sealer from the factory, but most (maybe 20% of the surfaces) appears pitted by depth into the surface.
