Hi again. On my 135hp 1973 Evinrude.

Wrench tells me I have bad reeds, so I look into it. Here's what I found. Just one set of the reeds were damaged. They looked sprung, but when I took it apart this is what I saw! The metal is actually pushing the reed valve open! I can't imagine how this could have happened unless it just got super hot and melted the metal! Even so, why did it do it here! Thought you guys would enjoy seeing the pictures and maybe have some idea of how this happened! BTW, I do have low compression on the cylinder behind this set of reeds. It's somewhat scored, but still within 10 points compression compared with the other cylinders.

Follow the links below for the pix:
http://www.youngdisciple.com/Ebay/Ted's/Reeds1.jpg

http://www.youngdisciple.com/Ebay/Ted's/Reeds2.jpg

http://www.youngdisciple.com/Ebay/Reeds3.jpg

OK! They're working now! I'll also try to post them so they appear right here, but I don't know if I can make it work!

No, they work, but you'll have to put quotes around the address because you have a space in the filename. It's better practice not to name files with spaces, really. Nice macro pics though. :p

Interesting, because I can see them fine. Just wish I could help you with the cause. I'm definitely more a learner than a teacher when it comes to these things. ;o)

Fine now.

I dont think this happened while running, but maybe some time reeds were off. I see no signs of blow-by, unless you cleaned it off. I dont think blow-by could heat the casing enough, I once disassembled one with a VERY scored cylinder, causen by overheat, reeds were black and soothy at the bad cylinder, but once cleaned, like new.

File the edges off or replace with another casing.

By second thought - I'm sure something once was rattling around in there. Its the lower leaf - right ?

G Dane, I have a new set coming in the mail now. the last part I need to get the boat on the water again! Hooray!

I did do a Seafoam decarb before disassembly that might have cleaned things up? I can't figure what could have happened! The gasket looks funny too. I'll post those pix in a minute.

For sure, something was in there - and something there wasnt supposed to !! Check that it is out now. If you havnt, who could have removed this thing ? Do you know the previous owner. It would be nice to know the thing got out, for your piece of mind. - Well - I better get to bed now, clouse to midnight here.

Re: Pix of flamed? reeds! Is this normal?

Thanks for the posts G Dane. I don't know what it could have been, since I didn't find anything, but that does make sense, esp, since it's the same cylinder that is scored! Yes, it is the lower leaf, now that I think about it!

The former owner joined the military, and doesn't answer e-mails anymore :( I guess I'll have to solve this one myself, but I'll have a good look around to see if I find anything in there.

It lookes like a bolt was lying between the leaves, rattling for some time. There has been a previous post from a guy who started his motor and it went off like a rocket. He found a bolt stuck in throttle butterfly. Luckily these reeds dont open much, to let bigger things pass.

Ouch! That's amazing! Imagine what could have happened! The wrench had the carbs off, so maybe he found something. I'll have to ask if he remembers.

Re: Pix of flamed? reeds! Is this normal?

My guess is the engine swallowed something (nut, screw, washer, etc) because it's on the intake side of the cage. Whatever it wuz got trapped between the reed and the cage and the highspeed "flapping" of the reed hammered it into the cage. Just conjecture though.

See if you can smoke Hadley out and see what he thinks.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Pix of flamed? reeds! Is this normal?

Just got the new reeds put in today and it runs sooo much better! I can actually idle down now without it stalling! Yippeee. Ran across a really strange thing though when I replaced the reed valve: the used replacement I installed had two leaf plates on one side instead of only one! Fortunately I noticed, and removed the extra one! I wonder if it ran like that on the former motor? Maybe came from the factory that way. Anyway, thought it was interesting.

Thank you for helping me get it going!

Ted
