PL transom lamination

Hey guys I've got a problem. I cut out my plywood { two 3\4 pieces and one 3\8} And was going to glue them together with PL and stainless scews outside the boat then glue that piece into the transom. I coated all three parts with epoxy and let them dry. Then I scuffed them with 60 grit and applied PL with a notch trowel and screwed them together and let them dry for 24 hours. Problem is I just drilled a hole saw through it because I was going to do a rough cut for the outdrive and the glue is still tacky. Will this harden or should I not have coated the wood with epoxy. And should I use PL to glue this piece to the transom. Thanks for any reply.

uh...*which* glue is still tacky ?

I'd PL it to the hull and glass everything else. Should be real solid when you're done.

I might be wrong, but I think the PL needs air to fully cure/dry. If you have it sandwiched in between to sheets, the outside will dry along the edges and the inside will take alot longer to dry. Kind of like putting a big blob of it down and the outer skin will harden, but the inside will take longer.

Re: PL transom lamination

i used pl to adhere my stringers and transom, the tube says 24 hrs to cure, in the case of my transom it took 3 days, i think when they say 24 hrs they are talking about a film of less than 1/8 in, what size trowel did u use??
be patient it will dry, it will b as solid as one peice
i took 2 peices of scrap plywood and glued them with this stuff left them for 2 days and tryed to seperate, it ripped one layer of wood completely off, not on the pl joint on the plywood lam from the factory
be patient give it a day or two more to dry, u wont be dissappointed.

Agreed...let it dry, it will! And I used the pl to attach my transom to the hull in my Imperial, worked great as it filled the slight grooves left behind from my sad grinding work...I let it set with clamps over a 3 day weekend, it set up great.

I PL's my transom and stringers in...notched troweled the transom...solid as a rock. The stringers took longer because the PL was thicker, but they all hardened up with a little time....

Patience...all you need is a little patience...;)

Re: PL transom lamination

Thanks guys makes me feel better. I didn't want to redo every thing. I put the peice up on saw horses and put a radiant heater under it to warm it up a bit. I have a busy month and trying to get this project done before vac in july.
