bought a shakespeare PL-259-G connector for my antenna. i don't have a radio yet but getting ready. my cable looks to be just under 1/4" thick but this connector looks like it has closer to about a 3/8" opening that is threaded. the instructions on the back say to thread it onto the cable. i don't see how this can thread onto it. am i wrong or did i buy the wrong part? i didn't open the package yet so maybe there is a piece inside i'm not seeing?

There are several different diameters of coaxial cables.

It should have come with a screw-in adapter for smaller diameter cable.

boatman37, there are tons of videos on YouTube showing different installations of PL-259 connectors onto different size coax cable. Take a look-see and see if there is a version that supports your cable size and connector...

RG58, RG59 and RG6 are common coax cable types and they are not all the same diameter.

just got back. the existing cable is RG58. the antenna and cable were already on the boat when i bought it but the end was missing for whatever reason. i ordered a radio yesterday and needed to put a connector on my cable. didn't realize there were different sizes. watched a youtube and they said it was an RG8 so i assumed they alll were. well you know what happens when you assume...lol. so i need to pick up one for the RG58 now.

Yes you do. And they make such a PL-259 coaxial connector too. Sound like you have it figured out now... One other thing I would think about. If this coax cable has to feed through any hole opening, do that first before installing the connector because the connector is a larger diameter then the coax and therefore will not fit through the small opening... JMHO. :thumb:
