planer boards ?? [tampa area]

why dosn't anybody use planer boards in the gulf? or salt water in general. Am I missing something? is it weeds, waves, fish attacks? waddauthink?

They are used quite extensivly for Striped Bass fishing in the Mid-Atlantic States. Some are starting to experiment with them offshore as well.

they do use them but a lot of aritificial jigs are built with planers in them or we top water troll so there's no need for them but I still see guys doing it occassionally.

It just seems to me that planers would be easier than messing with kites and go out further than outriggers.The reason I bring this up is, the area I fish in is from 15-40 feet mostly. I usualy troll for grouper, and want to get a larger spread. And I'm asking to see if there's a reason why NOT to buy planers

These are like mine, which is 1x6". Scale up for the bigger 10" size.

Here are plans for the 10" planers.

Weight is your friend. Use a heavy wood for best results. Most use yellow pine for its weight and resistance to rot.
