On my 1974 15HP there are 2 plates, one with the seriel No. and one with starting instructions. I want to remove these for repainting and refix. The current fixings appear to have a very small hexagonal head - can they be unscrewed? - or are they just hexagonal rivets? - any ideas gratefully received!

Re: Plates

Best method I've found for that is 3M's fine-line (blue)masking tape.....apply and trim as needed with an exacto knife.
Clean the plates with soap-N-water...no solvents, they can remove some printing, and soap removes oil residual insted of "thinning" it like paint thinner or that sort of solvent.

Re: Plates

I've coated them with petroleum Jelly and then just cleaned it off when finised. It works!

Re: Plates

They're like mini ardox nails - they're a friction type fastener with spiral flutes. Sort of like an extreme corse thread screw.
I've gotten them out pulling with minature sidecutters while turning slightly counter clockwise. But like walleyehed and rickdb1booat said, it's simpler to mask the plate.
