Hey guys, my 85hp Johnson 1975 model needs new plugs. The normal ones are OK generally but after a little trolling they get dirty quick. I am wondering about these platinum ones.
Are they any good for 2 strokes?
Would they cause any damage to the electrics?
Are they to be recomended?
I heard from one guy with a four stroke they are great for low rev work, is this true?
Ross

Re: Platinum spark plugs

Hi Ross J,
I'am not familiar with platinum plug use in 2 cycle outboards. The idea behind platinum plugs is to give better electrical conductivity, less resistance and longer intervals between plug changes. They last much longer with less wear.If your plugs are getting fouled/dirty,they may be too cold a heat range or maybe too much oil in gas?

Stay with what is recommended! On a Motor this age, you can expect to have them get dirty when trolling. Changing now might cause more problems than you would think. You may gap them slightly wider to help out the low speed running. Say if they are gapped at .030, go to .035 and see how it goes. They will fire a little hotter that way.
