How much play should be in the distance between forward and reverse? I have a '83 Johnson 60 hp. Mine travels probably 6 or 7 inches from forward until it slips into reverse. Is this normal? If not how do I tighten it up? Thanks.

Can you be a little more clear on what you're describing? There are little plastic toothed trunnion nuts on the linkage at the motor and I think there's adjustments made in the controls. You'll need a manual to do this at home.

I'm guessing you're talking about the range of travel in the throttle lever on the controls.

I'm giving a quick reference my manual that covers a '77 85hp. It states approximately 45 degrees of lever travel is required to complete shift into FWD or REV.

Take a look see at the angle of control lever when it engages the shift lever on motor in both FWD and REV.
