Taking the admiral and admiral, jr. (who is the real admiral;))to Playa mid March. Done the deep sea thing several times and have grown tired of it. I'm really jonesing for a flats trip. I want to fly fish for Bones, Permit, Tarpon, etc. Can anyone recommend a good outfit down there to take me? I know there are many, but I would appreciate any beta you guys can provide. Many thanks.

My favorite bonefish fly is the "buggy shrimp". Easy to tie (was). I would tip it with a small sliver of conch. Let them smoke the reel. One of my favorite fish to catch. Tarpon, Permit? I leave that to the more expierenced guys. I have a tough time with them spinning tackle.

Where is Playa...incoop? Spanish for beach to me.

Playa Del Carmen. Flying in/out with my girls and don't want to bring my own tackle, so I'm hoping to find someone who provides fly gear. It's looking like the best bet is a ferry ride over to Cozumel to fish the north tip of the island. Apparently there are large flats there that are relatively unpressured, but at first glance it appears no one provides fly tackle. Really don't want to hump my own all the way to Playa and back for one $300 day trip.

"Couldn't find any green frowny faces, and apparently iboats limits me to five of the red ones. Have a great time, but think of us poor pitiful souls once or twice while you're down there. Sounds like you picked an outstanding destination. We expect a detailed trip report upon your return so we can live vicariously".

Looks like it's my turn to send "frowny faces". :D

When I was researching our first caribbean vacation that is one of the area's I looked at.
But....I'm glad I took Sasto's advice. Maybe you should too.

Whatever you do, have a great time. :)

I have fly fished Belize City in the past. Not far from Playa. Incoop , normally the charters provide a rod and reel and you provide your own tackle. Check them out in Playa, I believe you will find most will satisfy your needs.

Good Luck. Have Fun!

Ha! You got me Swabbie.:D Would love to go elsewhere. The admiral and I have been to Playa, Cancun, Cozumel, and Cabo together and I've been to Acapulco in a previous life. However, my little one had her heart set on Mexico because we've been there so many times without her, so that's where we're going. We did at least find a really neat resort that's not the archetypal all-inclusive giant. It is all-inclusive, but it's family owned by Playa del Carmen residents and is really a unique place with lots to keep a youngster's attention. Should be a good time even though there are hundreds of places I'd rather go on my own dime. It's funny Sasto, for some reason the MO down there seems to be for the outfitters to provide spinning tackle, but not fly tackle. Not sure why.
