Please confirm that this is the correct stator replacement

I'm replacing the stator and trigger on my 1993 Mercury 60HP 2 stroke twin carb 3 cylinder outboard (serial number is OC161680).

I have imported a replacement from the USA, it is a CDI Electronics unit, part number 174-5454K1. According to the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide, this is a direct replacement for Mercury Part Number "398-5704A2, 4 and 7 (3 cylinder)". My original stator is 398-5704A4, so this should be a replacement, however, there are some significant differences, as can be seen from the photos below:

Re: Please confirm that this is the correct stator replacement

As you can see, my original unit is wholy encased in a plastic cover, the CDI Electonics unit is not.
My original unit has 5 wires (black, red, blue and two yellows), the CDI has 6 wires (no black, but has a red/white and blue/white). The installation instructions say for 3 cylinder application to connect the white striped wires to ground.

Can anyone confirm that this CDI Electonics unit is in fact a proper replacement?

Also, the instructions say that the CDI Electronics stator is not to be used with the flywheel containing gluid-in magnets (1988 and newer). My unit, AFAIK, is 1993, this is the flywheel, anyone able to confirm wheather or not these are glued in magnets (they don't look glued in to me, looks like they're heald in place by a screw)?

Re: Please confirm that this is the correct stator replacement

Hi,

I've got a similar problem on my 50hp merc, mines 1985 4 cylinder though and do you think i can even find a bloody stator the right model for my engine?!?

I was chatting to a guy down the yacht club about it last night who's a retired electronics engineer, he suggested getting the coils rewound which here in the UK wouldn't be too hard to get done for not a lot of cash, infact a damn sight cheaper than a new stator!

I just wondered if you'd heard of anyone else doing the same?

Have you looked at the Sierra Marine catalogue? I used that to fit the part number, then searched eBay USA to find one. Then purchased it and got it posted to me here in Australia. Was significantly cheaper than dealing with the local Mercury agents...

O, and in answer to my original questions. I ended up fitting it, have taken the boat out and it ran well, so must be the right one.

Hi, no not seen that one, did you buy from Sierra or did you just use that to find tha part number and then buy off ebay USA? Out of curiousity how much did you pay for the stator?

The prob with mine is the engine won't even start or spark, the resistance in the blue wires is all over the place!

I see what you mean about the prices on ebay USA, just emailed a firm over there for a quote for the stator, trigger, rectifier, coils, switchbox, plugs and leads. If all of these can be bought and delivered to the UK for under $400 then i'll change the lot!

I use the Sierra website to find the part numbers then search on eBay.com.au with Worldwide, and buy from the USA. So much cheaper than buying locally here.

Re: Please confirm that this is the correct stator replacement

In the late 80's and early 90's Merc had terrible trouble with stators. It got so bad that I lost track of what replaced what and in the end just ordered new parts with the original numbers (as per the parts catalog) and let 'the system' sort out what I should receive. It worked for me because I was ordering from Merc (Melbourne) as I was a dealer.

As for using Aftermarket suppliers... ??? Never had to deal with that, most of the bad stators failed during warranty and the owners were happy because it didn't cost them anything. I do remember that when a different stator arrived it had a full set of instruction on which wires to use where and what to do with the other wires.

From the photos and the instructions you received I'd say that the stator you got was designed as a 'multi-fit', doing both 3 and 6 cylinder engines. following the instruction should steer you clear of any problems, if you find a problem, contact the supplier.

Hope this helps...

Re: Please confirm that this is the correct stator replacement

This is an old post but I will update incase anyone else needs this info.
I know for 100% sure this will not work in a 6 cyl! I own a 4 cyl 77 Mercury 850 and every wire mounds up. The six cyl stator will have extra wires. As to having these rewired, it is 100% doable! You can even do it yourself!!!!!! All that you need is the coated copper transistor wiring. As you can see, it will be a little more dificult to rewire if it is encased in plastic. You will have to chip it all off to get to the coils. As soon as you do, the power wires for the coils will come off with them. I have done a couple. There are all kind of steps online to show you how. Make sure you count how many turns the wire goes around each coil. Also only do one at a time. There is also a company that rebuilds them on ebay for $60. Try "stator rebuild service". He mainly does motorcycle stators but will do all if possible.

Re: Please confirm that this is the correct stator replacement

Merc didn't have a stator for my 1981 40 HP motor, so I ordered one from Iboat, it came with very diferent wiring than the original, so I e-mailed CDI and they called me back and explanied what to do with the extra wires, it works great, give them a call.
