Well, that explains why the cylinder is scored. You have a broken reed valve. Fix that before you start a major overhaul.

Where is the reed valve? I did not think this engine had them.

Ok, what your model number, as none of the 86 50hp had vro, according to BRP they had this fuel pump http://www.iboats.com/18_7352_Fuel_...8118897--**********.433900912--view_id.174141

here is a picture from my 88 50hp same motor one is fuel pump the other is hose routing.

I beg to disagree.
My 1986 50 horse RECREATIONAL came with a first generation VRO. The type that would change the mix between 1:50 and 1:100 dependent on the rpm of the engine.
There are not many 50 horse engines left with that VRO. Lots of them set up because of lean mixture problems
I replaced it with a traditional fuel pump, based on my "keep it simple, stupid" principals. The Commercial 48HP still had the regular fuel pump

The reed valves are located between the carbs/intake manifold and the crankcase, John.

Took the reed plate out, all look great and are closed, no carbon or any build up around them. Shined a light behind them could barely see any light at all. Could not get a .003 feeler in there, I assume that is ok? The other night, I held two fingers over the lower carb and she idled, that was with the lower unit submerged in a tub of water and muffs on also. Tonight she would not idle, with just the muffs, no tub. Only if I hit the prime/choke solenoid. I will be getting my pistons soon. I am going to tear the motor apart next week.
