Re: Please Explain...

rabidfish
over the years I have learned its all about the common sense and understanding the basics. :) after that its a done deal.
gotta have common sense. kinda like the warning using flush muffs about to much water pressure blowing seals and gaskets. if you can figure out how to make the muffs seal that tight on the gearcase water inlets then odds are you could break an anvil with a rubber hammer. if I am using muffs I turn it on all the way. its a hold over from the days of the washport that threaded into the gearcase just below the pump wear plate in the lower housing. like a lot of the other myths. like the myth that an outboard impeller,if installed the wrong direction can right itself :) . I get 10-15 a year with "new pumps" that when testing it will end up being the vanes in the wrong direction.

You dont have to get upset. I was just stating what the manual says. If you are calling me a fool for going by the book, then what does that say about you? Is the waterpump the only thing that it may damage by rotating the engine counterclockwise?
Besides, we are not talking about cranking the engine counterclockwise, just rotating it by hand.

The impellor is offset in the cup and on one side the vanes get bent and on the other side they straighten out. I say if you damage the impellor by turning it backwards by hand then you needed a new impellor anyway.

Seriously... I am not upset... at all.
Certainly not at you. My problem is with the manual company. Their superb marketing has taken your money, fooling you into thinking that with their help, you'll be a real boat mechanic. ( again, not meaning to be disrespectful, And I am NOT signaling "you" out. They have done this to everyone)

My theory is this: If someone goes to the trouble and expense do buy a manual so they can do a job right. Then why not print a manual that has the "right" procedure in it???

Having said that... I am not stating that the complete manual is junk either, it isn't. But you do have to have "alot" of common sense to know where to read between the lines. With the OEM manuals... well, let's face it, they have the ability to make a common man, do the job like a pro. (Almost)

To answer your question: Yes. The water pump is the only reason to not turn it backwards.

If I have offended you or anyone else here, I apologize, as it was not my intent.

Re: Please Explain...

I get what your saying Rabidfish, and completly agree. It's the same with the car manuals that cover 6 models and 12 engines from 1957 to 2004 in a 200 page book for.

About the impellers. While I was replacing mine, I tried out a few things before replacing the LU. I put it in correctly, and turned it CCW a few turns. the blades floped over. A few CW turns and they flopped right back. I shoved the impeller in there with the blades facing different ways, and they all straigtened out with a turn CW.

Now, this doesn't mean a 2 year old impeller would do the same thing, and I would not sit there and rotate the thing back all day, but I am confident, that on _my_ engine, 3/4 turn CCW will be ok. As soon as a blad hits the relaxed side of the pump, it goes nearly 100% straight, and can comfortabley change direction without binding.

Again, I agree, in general, I don't want my motor spinning backwards either.

Also, as rodbolt pointed out, hold the flywheel, adjust the depth tool to hit the piston, pull out the slack, mark, and continue the stroke, down->up until you hit again, mark. No CCW turning needed.

That should make us all happy :)

Re: Please Explain...

I actually bought my manual off the internet. It is an older Clymer manual printed in 1985, and covers 1973-1984 year models. I found this to be the most detailed boat shop manual available to the average Joe.
However, I won't turn the motor counterclockwise even though the manual says to.

Re: Please Explain...

You could just remove the lower unit while you do this procedure then you wouldn't need to worry about the pump!
