I am new to this fourm and also new to boat motors! I just bought one of later model 15hp chrysler Outboard. The motor looks like it has hardly been used. The owner said he had not started it in about 2 years but ran good before he got rid of his boat. So i had to pick a female connector for the gas line and I thought I would be all ready to go.

I got it to start for a sec or 2 with some ether, the I found I wasnt getting gas(wrong connector) fixed that now I cant even get a sputter out of it. I am getting spark at the plug and I have good Comp. I cant even get it to do anything with ether now, Any suggestions to point me in the right direction would be great

Howdy, jwpan.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Never use ether in a 2 stroke engine. It is an invitation to destruction.

Go to the Engine FAQs and do "Outboard won't start".

Good luck. :)

NO NO NO to ether on a two stroke. Use a squirt bottle with gas/oil mix only. Check and make sure your choke is working correctly. Another possibility, since it has sat for so long, is the float bowl is gummed up and needs to be cleaned out. Good luck.

If you are spraying ether into the choke butterflies and not getting even a sputter I would start with the choke. Do as mentioned and mix oil and gas mix in a spray bottle or use fogging oil and spray some in the carburator choke area and then choke it closed. If that dont create a sputter try removing the plugs and spray a little gas in there then put the plugs back in and try again. You say you are getting a spark. How did you test for this. Have you gotten a compression test on it yet? Before dumping money into this I would test compression and spark. If you dont have one or the other chances are the cost will be high to get this motor to start. If both are good you should be able to get it running for under 50 bucks.

I ground the plug on a bolt and slowly pulled the cord slowly and both plugs had good sparks.

I took the bowl apart and it could have not been much cleaner.

I will not be using ether anymore lol

My choke seems to function fine, I am just lost on how I she was wanting to scream so I gave her the gas she needed and now I cant even get a moan out of her

Is it possible you reversed the spark plug leads? Normally this would cause a back fire but it might also not allow it to fire.

It's pretty simple realy. An engine, (gas that is), needs air, fuel, and spark to run. Compression does play a big role in how well it will run though. If these things are present than undoubtedly it should start. With that being said, I think you are missing one of these elements and you will have to verify which one it is. One thing as a possibility, depending on how much ether you used, it could have already done unreversible damage to the engine in regards to pistons and rings. Not trying to scare you as this would be a last resort thing to check for. Also, I know you said you had spark, but quality of spark is important and it should be a nice hot blue spark jumping across a 3/8" gap. Not orange or at all faint because than the compression itself can "blow" the spark out before it actually ignites the fuel.

Reading your post again I realized that you checked for spark with a bolt but that does not mean your plugs are actually releasing a spark. A partially fouled plug will only fire 80-90% of the time. I would make sure they are not fouled out.

Man, it is late and I'm too tired to be doing this. I read your post incorrectly therefore I apologize. Dis-regard the last thread that I had posted. Good luck.
