Ok, I'm starting another thread because people seem to have given up on me on the other one.

I have a 1960 Johnson 10 HP, model QD-21. It was sitting for about 12 years. I got it for free. I replaced spark plugs, lower unit oil, impeller, coils, cleaned and gapped points, and rebuilt carburetor. Still won't start. It has good compression.

I have a nice blue spark that jumps over 1/2 inch. So I was thinking it must be fuel. But even when I remove the carb and spray fuel in directly it still won't start, sounds like it wants too, but won't. The spark plugs are dry when I pull them. Should there be fuel on them? My dad says it has to be timing. If anybody has any clue please help!!! I am ripping my hair out.

Could also be the reed valves behind the carbs in the intake.

Yup, I'd first look at reed plate behind carb. If that's not the problem, then I'd replace the carb. It may have an internal crack or leak. It should at least fire even if timing is off. Really the only timing on the motor is to make sure the flywheel key is not sheared. You can check the link and sync, but again it should at least fire if it's off. There is a mark (line) on the cam on the armature plate. A little rubber roller rides on the cam, and connects to the carb. Look in the throat of the carb and the butterfly should just start to open when you advance the throttle and the rubber roller hits the mark on the cam. When the throttle is completely advanced, the butterfly should be wide open. That cam is adjustable via two bolts on the underside of the armature plate.

I heard something about reed valves before, what do I do to check if they are clogged? Also, what is a link and sync? And yes JB I know the top secret files by memory now. Thanks to everybody for your help, I am so frustrated. You know that scene from "office space" with the copier in the field, that's gonna be my outboard if I don't get this thing going!

When you changed coils, are you 100% sure you didn't mix up the spark plug wires, on the coils. If you did, it would fit all the symptoms you describe.

I know i didn't mess anything up when I changed coils, cause they just slip in and slip out, but maybe the spark plug wires got crossed at the plugs, right now they are not crossed, top wire goes to top plug, but I can't say 100% sure that they were like that when I first got it. That would really keep it from starting?
