Please Help? 1989 85HP Force Electric Choke

Hello,<br /><br />I just purchased a Bayliner with an 85Hp Force motor. The previous owner told me he used starter fluid to start the motor bacause the switch was bad for the electric choke. I do not like that idea and with a little investigating, I noticed that some backdoor wiring had been done on the boat because it was not like the schematic had called for. Anyway, I rewired according to schematicand everything works except the electric choke. I tried to bypass the switch by taking the green wire off of the electric choke and touching it with a hot wire but still nothing. Is there a way I can tell if the electric choke itself is bad rather than the switch? This is a unit that you press in the key to activate the choke and then turn.<br /><br />Thank you very kindly in advance. Gary

If you have a battery charger you can remove the choke solinoid from the motor. connect the black lead of the battery charger to the mounting ears and with the choke solinoid laying sideways touch the threads on the bolt with the red wire from the battery charger. When you do this you want the plunger about 1 inch out of the hole and when you touch the threaded bolt it should pull in. If it dont it is probably not working. If it does work connect a DVM set to DC volts to the wire now disconnected from the starter solinoid amd the other test lead to battery ground. With ignition switch in run position (not start postition) have someone push in on the key and see if you read 12 volts.

Eurolave, Rusty,<br /><br />Thanks guys for the comments. i just removed the solinoid and tried the battery charger s described. Nothing happened but a few sparks once I touched the + to the screw threads.<br />I also replaced the ignition bt it apparently is in the choke. is there another way to determine if this choke is working other than replacing it? i beleive thats the only way i know . if it wass good it should of snap in. can you get another one and try it? also scroll down some i went thru the same thing your doing about 2 weeks ago you might find some more help there also.

If you have an ohm meter measure the ohms between the metal case and the screw. My guess is the rubber insulator between the screw and the body has degraded creating a short. Ohms will read between .6 and 1.2 ohms. Measure your test leads first and subtract that amount from what you read on the solinoid.<br /><br />Also with the battery charger. If it does not put out at least 10 amps I doubt it will fire the solinoid. They take a lot of current to energize. Try a jumper wire with everything hooked up to the boat except make sure the wire going to the solinoid is disconnected. Connect one side of the jumper cable to the positive battery lead and then just touch the jumper wire a half second to the solinoid screw and see if it engages the chokes on your motor.

Thanks guys for the quick replys. I will try both suggestions. I am just one step from taking it in to be repaired. I just bought the boat off of a buddy and it is in really good shape but I have yet to have it in the water. I have three kids and they are bugging the **** out of me to get it in the water atleast once before the end of season and living here in mi.,I don't have much time left. <br />I am going to go look at the insulator to see if it is rotten and go from there.<br />Thanks again guys.
