Hello,

First off I would like to say what a great site this is!

Ok. My problem is this folks.

I have a second boat in which I bought mainly for the motor off of my nextdoor neighbour. At first he said he had the key for it, then a few weeks pass and says he can't find it. Ok, so I got mad and slammed a screw driver in the key switch to try and break it "yea yea I know your laughing by now lol" But anyways. Little to my disapointment that never worked.

Ok so the question is, this is a 1971 Evinrude LARK 50HP Electric start, It has the control box with the push button shifting for reverse, neutral and forward.

I went to a store here and bought a 4 point ket switch. Could somebody be so kind to tell me what wire/color wire goes where. I'd really appreciate this!

Lastly, I was reading in another thread that a guy couldn't get anything from his starter, and the reason for this is he had it slightly out of neutral. Do you think this would be possible in my situation? I know I hacked the key switch because when I turn it, it makes the click sound. I turn the prop and it won't spin freely like it would my other boat when it's in neutral.

Any help would be very much apprecaited!

Thank you
Jay

Re: Please help! 50HP Evinrude Ignition

I just went outside to double check, the motor is stuck in gear, the prop does not spin freely. If I try and turn it "with much force" you can hear the pistons compressing in the cylinders.

Question, how do I get it in Neutral if I can't get it to run? I really hope that this motor has a neutral saftey feature which disables the starter??????
Again, it is a 1971 Evinrude LARK 50HP electric start.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you

Re: Please help! 50HP Evinrude Ignition

Hey thank you very much!

But I think I don't even need to worry about the ignition problem right now, I think my problem is that the motor is stuck in grear?? and it being in gear won't let the starter turn the motor over.. Could this be my problem?

If so I would I go about getting it in neutral?
Thanks again on the color codes!
Jay

Re: Please help! 50HP Evinrude Ignition

Hello thundercraft
My name is Tom and I have a lot of experience with the motor you are describing
I am going out on a limb without the model but what you have is a hydroelectric shift. the push button switch is no longer availibe. dont tear it up :)
the wire colors are easy and striaght fwd. red is bat purple is ign black is magneto. if this is a 3 cyl motorthere is also a purple white for choke. the prop will lock into fwd gear anytime the engine is off
the gear case is hydraulicly shifted when one of two solinoids is activaated.
I still have some parts around for it.if you wish more info reply again

Re: Please help! 50HP Evinrude Ignition

Sounds like you have an Evinrude with hydro-electric shift. This set-up requires that you power up the ignition to shift the lower unit. When no power is applied, the lower unit is in forward. To get neutral, you have to power the Green wire to the lower unit. Reverse is when both the Blue and Green wire to the lower unit are powered up. Repair the ignition first and try it again.

Re: Please help! 50HP Evinrude Ignition

Your motor is always in forward gear until you supply power to the nutral seleniod. Then it has to rotate enough to get the hydrolic pump in the lower unit to supply fluild to make the shift. You really should have a manual before attempting work on these models. Some very expencive parts can be damaged while your tring to learn the hard way. Do a serch on this board on hydro elec. shift models.

Re: Please help! 50HP Evinrude Ignition

Thank you again.

Such quick response :)

Actually. I am just going to get this baby runing so I can sell. So if any of you are interested in it, I am going to be moving it for a reasonable price, or just Ebay it in the spring.

I guess I am going to have to take back the ignition I just bought "or try and use it" and try to get the motor in neutral :)

And I don't know if it is a bad thing to sell stuff on here. If so just let me know and I will delete it or edit the post.

But if anyone is interested in the motor my email is sarnialuva@hotmail.com

Thanks for the help guys.
P.S. Does anyone here have a key switch for this control box I could buy off of them?

I would trade a 20HP Max Kicker Motor bracket.

Guy's.

I been reading all the search results for this hydroelectric shift evinrude. Is this a good motor, seriously. Or is it a money pit?

What could I expect to get for a motor like this. It does look in good condition. Hope I can get it to run and shift good. Hasn't been started since last summer.
Regards
Jay

When they work, they're great. When they don't, there're a nightmare. I have no idea what it's worth. Might look around E-Bay and see what they are going for. Good Luck,
