Please help! 85hp 85' Force no start/ compression or fuel problem?

Thanks ahead of time for any one who has any input. Lets start with the engine wont start. I replaced the stator, and now I have spark. I cleaned the carbs because of the boat sitting. Replaced fuel line from pump to tank, including the bulb. I could spray gas in the carbs and get the engine to pop but thats it. I checked the fuel flow and thought it was weak so I replaced the pump. I still have the same if not worse fuel flow. I then checked compression because its a mechanical pump and that'd be a reason for bad fuel flow. I have #1 - 90 #2 - 120 #3 - 120 . Would this be enough to cause it to not start?? I figured it should still start when I squirt fuel in the carbs. at least for a moment. Any help is appreciated.

I don't usually say this but try starting fluid.Just to get it running.
You should NEVER have to use starting fluid on a good motor.This one is sick so it won't hurt.
The compression is something that needs to be fixed.A decarb might be helpful.To bring it up close to where the others are.30#s is a lot.
That much can make a difference in not starting.
Check for weak spark.Check the reeds.J

Ive already tryed spraying fuel in the carbs. with throttle open and the engine only pops once. how do I check reeds and for what? Just to see if their damaged?

Ive heard seafoam works good for decarbing and cleaning but I really need to free up the piston rings. Can I just spray it inthe carbs or do I have to pull the head off?

To decarb spray in the plug holes while the motor is tilted up.Spraying gas is ok but starting fluid works better.
If your really sure that it's just carbon then do a decarb.It could be a bad head gasket.
It sounds like you need to remove the head and check.
But do the starting fluid first.J

Have you checked to see if your choke plates are closing all the way? Are you using the cold start throttle position? Have you checked your timing?

1. DO NOT use starting fluid. It is ether, which is explosive, and it contains no lubricant. The fuel mix you have been using is safe and effective.

2. Go to the engine FAQs and run through the troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start". Let us know what you find.

You do have a compression problem but it is not causing your no-start. The troubleshooting steps should identify where that problem is.

If you replaced the stator and all it does is pop or backfire go back and make sure the flywheel pin is in right. It was a ***** to get mine right. If its out the timing gets funky and will not start. Tried to start it for hours after confirming I did have spark again to no avail. Took the flywheel off pin was off. Put it on right and fired up first turn. If you don't want to do that right away take your first plug out and turn motor looking for TDC then check the timing marks. Should be at or very close to zero. If not, the pin is out.

The "pin" that mikel is refering to is actually a "woodruff Key" and he is correct, just a few degrees off and the engine won't start. When checking with a timing light, at idle neutral, the timing should be 0-2 Before Top Dead Center.

So thats the official name for it? I thought it was called "that stupid little mother*@!*%#* key that wont stay on the crankshaft."

It's called that too, but not in mixed company.

Actually, the best way to install the key is

1. put some wheel bearing grease on the shaft in the key slot.
2. insert the key with the top pushed into the shaft slot. This results in the lower part sticking out away from the shaft.
3. slide the flywheel directly down over the key. As you come down, the key will work its way straight into the slot.

Be careful not to hit the key at all. If you do, it usually knocks it out of position and you have to start over. This job is much easier if you have someone directing you so that the wheel is flat coming down and not cocked.
