Hi,I got a 1964 sears ted williams model #574-60100.I have pulled carb. cleaned it. installed new plugs( autolite 216-crosses to champion H10c),gapped at .30. pulled flywheel set points at .20. got good spark. but it only spuders, some times a back fire. can anyone help me with this one? are my settings right? using 50:1 fuel. any sugestions welcome along with any and all info for the settings on this outboard. Is there anything else I need to set up(vales or anything else)?
Thanks

Re: please help getting outboard going

The specifications seem correct.Flywheel needs to be torqued to 400 inch lbs.If not tightened right the flywheel key might shear or be partially damaged this would throw off the flywheel magnet timing and thus the spark.
Try starting by carefully spraying fuel mix into a dry carb and try to start it.If it fires up then you may have a fuel supply problem probably in the carb.If it just sputters check the ignition settings again and check the key and keyway for damage. It only takes slight damage to the key or keyway to mess up the spark.
Have you checked the compression?

that's the $64K question....

- those things act like everything else in the world is wrong when the compression is below 95 or so... you need 105+

Fuel pump - it's the gasket diaphragm sandwiched between the bottom of the carb and the throttle body part... they're good for a few years

Reeds? - doubt it but you could check -they live in behind the carb

wrong carb - I bought a brand new marvel schebler SUM carb for one once - it just would not work no matter what i did

timing advance vs. throttle linkage - follow the book to the letter for this linkage adjustment - worth the time to get it bang on.
