Ok I have a 1988 60 hp Johnson vro I just bought and the vro had been disabled by cutting the oil line. Since the boat had been sitting for 3 years the orginal pump is bad. So I replaced with a non vro style pump. This is where is gets good. The guy at the marina told me the wrong hookups and I hooked the fuel into the vacuum port and did not realize. I could kick myself for not checking but too late now. I then tried to crank and it turned over then the starter completely locked. At first I thought the starter was bad but after careful inspection it was fine. So a day later I figured out what was going on and removing the bottom spark plug gas started pouring out. So I then took out all the plugs and turned the motor over twice for about 30 seconds. I had the plugs out and after disconnected the coil. I then tried to removed the brass vacuum hookup to see if I can get any gas to drain and I broke off the fitting. So now I have to somehow easy out the broke fitting and get my motor back running. Ok first questions is did I damage anything? The gas was premixed at 50:1 so everything should of been lubricated. So what should I do. I currently have the bottom plug out hoping it would evaporate some of the fuel ove night and I am going to try and tackle it tomorrow. The second issue is that once I remove the broke vacuum fitting can I just screw in a 1/8 piece of pipe and hook the vacuum line to it? Or is there something special about that fitting. It looks like it has a check valve in it but I can blow it both ways. Any help will be greatly appericated. I have less than a month to get this boat going.

doubt you hurt anything. keep the plugs out and ventilate it as much as possible to dry the gas up/out. rig a fitting/pipe until you figure out how to remove what is left of the broken off fitting. can the oil injection and go to pre-mixed...you'll never have to worry about pumps again...you'll just have to remember to always mix the fuel yourself just to be on the safe side.

Ok thanks. There is nothing to hook up the existing broke pipe. It is broke a few threads deep. I am going to have to get it out before I can do anything. Once I get it out will it be ok to use just a regular piece of threaded copper pipe or is there anything special about that fitting? Thanks again

Don't use a straight piece of pipe. Any hardware store or home improvement center (plumbing dept) has brass "hose barb" fittings. These have a standard pipe thread on one end and a hose barb on the other. Usually around a dollar and it will be a much more professional fix.

Silvertip has a good suggestion. You can figure out what kind of fitting it is by looking at what broke off or by maybe getting some of the threads out. Replace with similar material...the same if you can find it.

Re: Please help I am an idiot

OK guys I thought I would post my results for future refrence. I was able to successfully remove the broke vacuum plug with a brass ease out. Thank goodness I was really sweating it. I then put in some older plugs I had off my old boat and ran them until the motor quit smoking. After it was all said and one I still had the same problem as before. The motor would run a second then die. So I ended up removing the carbs and rebuilt them. After taking them apart I don't even see how the thing was running. The carbs were so gummed up that the needele and seat was stuck on one and the maine orfice tube was so clogged and gummed that it looked like someone slide a piece of fuel line over it. Oh well I guess thats what three years of sitting will kills the carbs everytime if not properly stored. Which bring me to another questions what is the proper was to store a boat for long periods of time? Do you turn off the gas and run the bowl dry. Then drain the bowls with the plug or do you run fuel stabil in it then run the bowls dry?
