Hello. I am considering buying a boat and motor from a fellow. The motor has no identification tag anywhere. The cowling says it is a 40 HP Johnson. It has two cylinders and has an oil injection tank. It is a dark blue color and appears to be in good condition. He did start it and it ran well cold and warmed up. The welsh plug was the only place I could find a number and it is G3844477. The fellow says it is a 95 but when I pressed him how he knew that he said that was the year the fellow he bought it from said it was. Thanks for your time and help me if you can. Rick.

Well I've been searching the web and found some good information. There is a number for Evinrude Customer Service. The recorded message said they are only providing information on antique motors and motors manufactured after 1996. Anyway I gave the nice fellow the welsh plug number and he gave me the information without hesitation. What I am looking at is a J40ELE0. It is indeed a 95- 40 HP. - carbureted - 20 inch shaft. I haven't bought it yet but I feel a lot better knowing the year and model number. Thanks, Rick.
