I have a Stratos 201XL with a Johnson GT 200, while out on the lake today I was cruising at about 40-45MPH (about 4000 RPM's) and all of a sudden it was like I thru it in neutral, the prop stopped turning and now will not go into gear at all, the motor is still running fine but no matter where I put the gear lever it will not engage the prop, whether it be forward or reverse it is all the same, also after I pulled the boat out of the water on the trailer I tried it again and when it is in forward position you can turn the prop with your hand just like you can when it is in neutral.

PLEASE HELP and thanks in advance to all who can tell me what to do here.

Maybe a broken drive shaft, drop the lower unit and check it out.

If it is a broken drive shaft is it going to be a very costly repair for me to fix?

As you can see I am new to this forum so not sure where to post this other question but I this boat also has a hydraulic jack plate and on several occasions now the jack plate will stop coming up, it will always go down but at times it will not come up and then I might go 3,4,or maybe 5 times to the river and then it will start working again, it's almost like a limiter switch or something it sticking, does this make sense??????

I can tell by looking at that drawing that I will be taking my boat to a boat mechanic for this repair, maybe they won't hit me to hard on the repair.

Daviet, I have been reading a few other post and replies on here about similiar problems, is it possible on this motor that I could have spun the prop or is this Johnson motor not setup that way??????

As I had stated I can turn the prop by hand with the gear lever in all thre position (forward, neutral, reverse) and it all feels the same in all 3 positions.

most times u will not be able to spin the prop by hand if it is spun..BUT..if you did like my son did...he did not know it spun and ans was 9 miles up the lake and ran open on and off and dam near dissinagrated the rubber....LOL....the last mile was on trolling motor to get home even low speed would not get him back on the prop....LOL....

If he had called i have a spare prop in the rod box....

now back to you...are you sure its shifting....you checked gear lever to see if its going into gear,,the one on the motor....cable is hooked up...did you look to see if it moves when you shift in gear....to rule out a broken cable....

also make sure the shifter rod has not came disconneted...

Re: Please help: Johnson 200-while running at about 40mph prop stopped turning

Al thank you for your reply, Yes I did check the shift cable and it is working and it is shifting all the way into the motor and is also lifting the rod that goes down towards the foot, I took the motor cover of and checked all of this and as stated it is shfting and moving the rod that goes down up and down as I move from forward to reverse. I also took the prop off and the bushing and all looks OK so it has got to be further into the foot/gear part of the foot.

When in neutral the prop of course moves/spins freely and then when I put it in gear you can still turn it by hand but not as freely and you can feel and hear it kind of clicking etc almost like it is not engaging fully etc.

Let me know if I have explained this to where you can understand what I am trying to say.

Also for Daviet the model number on my motor is 200STLESE

Thanks guys for all your help here.

OK thank you,

I am also trying to determine the best prop for my boat/motor, currently it has a 4 blade Renegade OMC 13 1/2 X 23 but I want to go back to a 3 blade and get rid of the 4 blade, so what should I be looking for in terms of max RPM's for this motor????? and what would you recommend for a good all-around prop, one that will get me out of the hole good and also give me great top end speed?
