Thanks for all the advise.

I am not taking furniture with me. Just clothes, stereo equipment and stuff like that. Not very heavy. I have a large film collection, however, but it does not weigh in the hundreds of pounds. Most of it will fit in the car and trunk.

I decided to completely replace the whole hub system with a new one. It is best to not take chances.

I have to add that this trailer may have been in some kind of accident. I had the whole thing taken apart and repaired a while ago. To be on the safe side I'll replace the hubs.

I see you're looking at oil bath hubs, just be cautioned that geese hubs are probably better for your future. http://www.hookedonfishingboats.com/trailerhubs.html Remember that if you use grease hubs with bearing buddy you are set for a few years. (Or longer) Oil baths, the bearings can start to rust in as short of time as 2 weeks if your not moving the trailer. This is very bad if you live somewhere where you don't use your boat all winter. Grease hubs are also cheaper and parts are almost always available locally if you have an issue. Choose what you wish to choose, just realize that there are better things out there.

(Oil bath hubs were designed for daily use and many miles, like a trucking company, and not really designed for water submersion)

Hi OP, seems to me your trip is somewaht short and light and if the tires have no obvious signs of tread or sidewall cracking/splitting from weather exposure they might be alright, but I'd keep the speed down and take a spare anyway.

Hi OP, seems to me your trip is somewaht short and light and if the tires have no obvious signs of tread or sidewall cracking/splitting from weather exposure they might be alright, but I'd keep the speed down and take a spare anyway.

Give it up man... he has already stated that he IS replacing his old tires..... Look at his boat... Can you not understand that he doesn't want to take chances with it? His trip is neither short nor will his trailer be light (for the tire size). He is very wise to take those old tires out of the equation. Call ANY tire manufacturer and ask them if they feel that their light trailer tires could be safe for highway use after 20 years..... NONE will say yes.

Some people seem to have a real hard time with someone doing PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE instead insisting that nothing should be replaced until it fails.... If those old rotten tires are so valuable, send him a UPS shipping label and I'd bet he'd be glad to give em to ya.

The WHAT is the fact that the OP stated that he was going to replace the tires.

This thread, like a lot of other ones, seem to go astray do the people not reading the entire post. In this case all the comments as to whether his tires could or couldn't make the trip had no bearing on this thread , since he said they were being replaced in his first post. He asked about what was needed to service/replace the hubs/bearings to make them safe for the 600 miles he would drive during the move.

All I said was that maybe he didn't need to replace his tires. I would still recommend going to a car shop to get the work done. Due to your experience level.

I am under the impression that the numbers on the side indicate one is 7 years old and the other 9. I doubt it as they look and smell brand new.


At least they are better than the ones I have already. Will keep an eye on them before and after every trip.

And, managed to overlook all the drama in this thread.

WOW! I guess the stories are true, a brand new, 9 year old tire!

Did you point this out to the dealer, or wait to get home to look at them?

I hope they work well for you.
Keep them inflated to near Maximum Pressure.
It is the flexing that kills them.

It's VERY possible.... as you PAID for new tires I would take this up with the place you bought them from... Explain that if you had wanted old tires you wouldn't have bought new... they SHOULD make it right.... there have been many cases of tires sold as new but actually being many years old failing and even causing fatalities in some cases.

I am not sure if I am looking at the right numbers, though. If I am, the last digits on one set of numbers are 03 on one and 05 on the other.

There are no trailer tire dealers here. Just Meijer and Quality Farm and Fleet.

After shopping around at the limited places that carry them I thought it over before buying them and figured that I won't have much more better luck anywhere else. No matter if I ordered over the internet or bought them local.

They smell new and the texture is slick and rubbery.

I got these at Meijer, which is like a WalMart in my region. Each are from different manuf. and are 2 ply. I will keep an eye on them.

yeah darren, according to your blog you are going you are going to use your boat as a u haul.

that means weight on the axle....and tires....you might want to get a higher rating

LOL, Ya gotta be kiddin....
First off, 600 miles is a long way for just the boat and trailer. boat trailers are built for the boat, with just a wee bit of extra capacity, loading the boat with anything extra, let alone useing it as a U Haul, is sure to put you over its capacity. That means, much more sway in the trailer, the tendancy of the extra heavy trailer to "Push" the tow vehicle when stopping, reduced control at highway speeds, and potentialy overloading a light duty tire set up past what even a new tire should carry. not to mention, when the state trooper pulles in behind him with the blue lights flashing and red tags the rig right there, hes going to have to go get the proper equipment anyway.
I simply cant beleive that anyone would suggest that this guy even attempt to do, what he is thinking of doing. he would be risking his boat & trailer, plus his tow vehicle, plus the lives and safety of every one on the road around him....

Go rent a Uhaul and make two trips if nessessary to go back later and get the boat.....
