I just bought a '94(93?) Evinrude model E10RELER3 that gets hot when it idles causing the temp alarm to trip. Takes about 5 minutes. Run up the rpms and it works fine. There is a stream of water running all the time but I don't know if it is less than normal. Also noticed water gurgling from somewhere on the top of the engine. Run hard with the cover in place and hot water drips from the cover. The engine didn't run much last season.

Also the engine either starts like a charm or turns into a nightmare. Runs great once it starts. (less that water drip?)

Found out the thermostat cap was loose causing the water drip. Started once ran for a few mintues, long enough to spot the water leak. Changed the plugs and now it won't start. No spark. Could be from the water.

Just ordered a service manual. Won't be here for a few days.

What do I check when there is no spark?

Welcome to the board.
If I were you, the first thing I would concern myself with iz the overheating. When you get your manual, replace the water pump, especially if the engine hasn't run for a while. Get that done and then we'll get 'er runnin'.

c/6

Hooty

Thanks Hooty. I'm going to try and order some parts (water pump, coil...) before the manual gets here.

might see if the red clip is properly attached to/inserted in the kill switch.

Where is the red clip on the kill switch?

The motor cranks, getting gas, no spark. We pulled a plug and I believe there was a weak spark then it died. Started once and ran for two minutes. Water was flowing OK.

Yuck! Found a mess of a wiring short under the OMC remote control. I suspect the kill switch was shorted. Looks like the wiring harness twisted, shorted, and burnt. The connectors are OK. Going to repair the wiring and see if she sparks.

I'm hoping the short didn't damage the engine electronics. Should I order a powerpack/coil?
