I'm not sure where to look to learn the exact model and part numbers of my engine and outdrive.

Can someone please guide me to locating the identifying part numbers on the engine or drive? I'd also love to know the best place to get the correct maintenance manuals. The photos below are from my new (used) 1990 Cobalt Volvo/Penta 5.7L DuoProp. Maybe you recognize the model(s) by their appearance.

Thanks for lending your expertise. :)

Looks like a 290 dp or DP-A outdrive. engine is most likely 570. Some here may be able to nail it down better.

Go to the Adults only sticky at the to of this forum and go to the Volvo info page. There you can download a manual for your outdrive and motor.

Also, go to this link and type in 570 in the "engine type" box. from there you can download an owners manual and check out some other info to properly ID your setup.

No problem. Nice to see an old Cobalt with the Volvo Dp.:D

Got any other pics of the new boat? How about a little history.:)

Thanks for asking - I'm happy to relate its history:

This was a 1990 Lake George dealer demo of the new DuoProp configuration soon after the design was introduced into the line. This particular Cobalt was obtained by me from the original owners, close friends with a rich and long history of performance boating on Lake George. In the earlier half of the last century, the family had built prototype racing boats for competition on the lake. Later, their son had a fantastic drag boat like so many that plied the lake decades ago. I'll never forget the sound of those flat hulls slamming across the water with big blocks churning rooster tails more than wake. In their family, Chris Crafts came and went - including some of the finest wooden performance boats you've ever seen. Getting a Cobalt was a natural choice for them as time went by. It is a fantastic hull design - on plane in three seconds and it just floats on top even in white caps. If I ever need another boat, this one will be the yardstick by which I measure the ride quality of another. Turn the wheel at high speed and it power slides like a dream. I called Cobalt last month and they were courteous enough to send me the original build sheet for the boat. That's service beyond compare.

In 19 years and just 400 hours, this boat never left fresh water and my goal is to keep it that way. A matching trailer for it was created up there by Performance Custom Trailers. It's going to get plenty of use and appreciation. It will be a pleasure to maintain it and share it with my good friends. They named it "Mach Schnell" which means "Make Haste" or "Make It Quick." I like it and wouldn't think of changing it.

The photo below is from last summer on the way to Bolton Landing.

Looks like a DP-A to me.. There is a tag on the engine port side above the oil filter with the number on it for the engine. You can go to Volvo's website and get the manual for the engine.

Looks like someone has painted that outdrive and the painted the anodes. Those should not be painted.

Were does the shift cable come through at on that outdrive? Did you take the cover off thats missing?

Thank you for your input. It's important to me. I know the owner said that a part was missing but couldn't relate it to me. I'd like to recondition the outdrive and correct these problems before next season. Looks like I'm well on my way and I really appreciate everyone's help. I'm so impressed with this forum and the nature of those I've met here.

Here is a link to the OEM service manuals for your drive and engine.
The drive could be a 290 or a DP-A or B series. Without seeing the top cap on the drive it's hard to say for sure. There is a tag right in front of the top cap on the drive that should have a tag that will tell you for sure. Which ever drive you do have, this manual covers all of them. http://www.4shared.com/file/48536730/fa3b3311/280_to_DP-C_Drive_manual.html

The tag for the engine should be back by the oil filter on the back of the block.
Here's the manual that covers all the 570 series engines.
