please help me identify this old merc..

I was given an old merc on friday. No identification plate is evident.There are a ton of different cast in numbers, but i don't have them handy. It's a red band. Here are some pictures..Does it look familiar to anyone? It's dusty, but in excellent shape otherwise.

Is there no silver dollar sized plug on the powerhead with a s/n on it?

There should be a serial number near the transom clamps that will tell you the year using a web site search for "mercury outboard serial number lookup"...it looks like a 4hp from around 69-72 to me. Nice looking motor.

I will take another look, but i didn't see anything near the clamps. Bright spark. Has been under a tarp for 20 years in a heated basement according to the guy who gave it to me. The prop is spring loaded if that makes sense..None f my Johnson rudes have been anything even similar..I believe it will be very difficult to find parts for.Thanks.

on the transom clamp possibly m67-4426
on what appears to be the water jacket 7182171
on the cylander wall 843-4498
Cant see a welch plug?

It's a 1970/71 Merc 40 ( model determent by the color on the decals + decal design )
One cylinder, 4 hp .

Could find the exact year if you got a picture of the front decal...

4 40 1-cyl 3764825 - 1974 USA (3764825 and above)

Wrong decal color, 1973 and forward had blue decals...

found a crack in the lower unit on this one.. Any chance in heck that this would fit it?
