I took apart my 1977 evinrude 6hp to change out the impeller and I found this roll pin/key on the drive shaft towards the top about 2 inches below the splines on the drive shaft. I dont know what it's purpose is, but it was sticking out on either side of the driveshaft a good 1/16". There was also some metal shavings around it. I think it may have been scraping the inside of the exhaust housing causing those shavings. Anyway, if no one can tell me what the purpose of it is, I am going to put the lower unit back on and forget that rollpin. Thanks!! as always.

That roll pin holds all of those parts above it in place, so you should leave it in place.

ummm.....when I took the LU off all the parts above that rollpin must have stayed up in there or, they werent there to begin with. I put everything back together and she runs and pumps good. should those parts above the roll pin usually come out when the LU is removed, or should they stay in place?
